Associate Professor Caner Şimşir was born in Ankara on September 8, 1977. He completed his middle and high school education at Ankara Anatolian High School. He graduated top of his class in 2000 from the Department of Metallurgical and Materials Engineering at Middle East Technical University. He also completed his master's and doctoral degrees in the same department. He worked as a research assistant during his graduate studies and earned his doctorate in 2008 with his dissertation titled "3D Finite Element Simulation of Steel Quenching to Determine the Microstructure and Residual Stresses." Between 2008 and 2011, he conducted research on the mathematical modeling of distortion at the Institut für Werkstofftechnik (IWT), a member of the IFHTSE in Bremen, Germany. In 2012, he began working as an assistant professor in the Department of Production Engineering at Atılım University. He served as deputy director of the Metal Forming Center of Excellence at the same university and also established the Residual Stress Laboratory and the Physical Simulation and Thermo-Mechanical Characterization Laboratory. In August 2019, he returned to the Department of Metallurgical and Materials Engineering at Middle East Technical University, where he continued his academic career. His expertise in multi-scale modeling and simulation of metal-based manufacturing processes such as heat treatment, metal forming, casting, and welding has had a wide impact in industrial applications. He has contributed to numerous industrial organizations through his projects. Assoc. Prof. Dr. Caner Şimşir has published more than 60 scientific and technical articles, including chapters in prominent sources such as the ASM Handbook 4B, the Handbook of Thermal Process Modeling of Steels, Quenching Theory and Technology 2nd Edition, and the Encyclopedia of Iron and Steel. Assoc. Prof. Dr. Caner Şimşir has contributed to the training of students in this field and developed projects in numerous areas, particularly in the defense industry. Caner's knowledge, scientific vision, and passion for research will always be remembered in both the academic world and the industry.
