Ammonia borane is highly auspicious hydrogen storage materials releasing H2 through hydrolysis in the presence of a suitable catalyst. Ruthenium is one of the most widely used metals affording high turnover frequency for hydrolytic dehydrogenation of ammonia borane. However, its large-scale catalytic application is hampered by its relatively high price. Consequently, an immense challenge is the enhancement of catalytic performance of the precious ruthenium. This review article deals with the available methods for increasing the utilization efficacy of ruthenium in catalyzing the hydrolysis of ammonia borane. Each method is assessed for its ability to escalate the catalytic activity, durability, stability, reusability, and lifetime of ruthenium nanocatalyst in the light of existing results. The progress in developing highly efficient ruthenium nanocatalysts for the evolution of H2 through hydrolysis of ammonia borane is discussed along with the available parameters. The existing literature reports on the ruthenium nanocatalysts are reviewed in the order of using (i) ruthenium complexes in aqueous solution, (ii) colloidal nanoparticles, (iii) carbonaceous materials as support, (iv) oxide supports, and (v) magnetic supports for making the ruthenium nanocatalysts magnetically separable. In each set, the narrated results are assessed by contemplating the enhancement in activity, durability, stability, lifetime, and reusability. Overall, each article is reviewed by considering its total contribution to the utilization efficacy of ruthenium nanocatalysts in the hydrolysis releasing 3 equivalent H2 per mole ammonia borane. The last section is devoted to give the conclusions and suggestions for the future works in the field.
