Shipping containers as a viable alternative for ad-hoc student housing

The lack of availability of student housing is an issue growing steadily in Türkiye. After 2020 COVID-19 outbreak where many of the student dormitories had been temporarily re-purposed into quarantine zones. A student who is not studying in their hometown has the options of renting a shared student house with ever increasing rents in Turkish economy’s current conditions of hyperinflation; or find a dormitory, whether it is a state owned one or a private one. The number of students who have been accepted in different cities than their hometowns but have not registered show increase with passing years. This study aimed to look at alternatives for student housing, particularly shipping container housing projects that are aimed at a students. Cases both domestic and foreign has been analyzed. They are discussed to get a better understanding of how these structures perform and what their limitations are. To this end, a case study is conducted at a dormitory building at 29 Mayıs University campus was analyzed with weather data collection. Building’s designers were interviewed and a month of monitoring the project displayed that many of the sample units that measured were within comfort levels most of the time in humidity and temperature levels.
