The main intention of this thesis was to be a case study to evaluate how earlier modes of public transportation became a tool in expanding Istanbul and shaping the spatial organization of its metropolitan area. The thesis starts with evaluating the period between 18th century and 1850, when summer residences around Istanbul gain popularity and began the process of suburbanization, creating a demand of commute between Istanbul and the suburb, eventually leading to the establishment of Şirket-i Hayriye. After that, characteristics and principles of the established system of mass transit was evaluated. The system started as a radial, hierarchical and node-based one, but eventually embracing orbitality, competition and linearity as the system expanded and new actors introduced, such as trams. Transit modes predominantly shaped spatial organization of the suburbs as most of the suburban population had to commute between center and periphery, therefore using ferry or tram daily. As this phenomenon was not special to Istanbul and was an emerging phenomenon through industrialization, the thesis often compared Istanbul with its contemporaries.
