Three dimensional design optimization using analytical and numerical jacobians
Eyi, Sinan; Degirmenci, M.; Yumusak, M. (null; 2011-12-01)
A design optimization method based on three dimensional Euler equations is developed. A finite volume method is implemented to discretize the Euler equations. Newton's method is used to solve the discretized form of Euler equations. Newton's method requires the calculation of the Jacobian matrix which is the derivative of the residual vector with respect to the flux vector. Different upwind methods are used in the calculation of flux vectors. Numerical and analytical methods are utilized in the evaluation o...
Three Dimensional Grain Boundary Modeling in Polycrystalline Plasticity
Yalçınkaya, Tuncay; Firat, Ali Osman (2018-04-25)
At grain scale, polycrystalline materials develop heterogeneous plastic deformation fields, localizations and stress concentrations due to variation of grain orientations, geometries and defects. Development of inter-granular stresses due to misorientation are crucial for a range of grain boundary (GB) related failure mechanisms, such as stress corrosion cracking (SCC) and fatigue cracking. Local crystal plasticity finite element modelling of polycrystalline metals at micron scale results in stress jumps at...

Three dimensional computational analysis of fatigue crack propagation in functionally graded materials
Sabuncuoglu, Baris; Dağ, Serkan; YILDIRIM, BORA (Elsevier BV, 2012-02-01)
This article proposes a new finite elements based three dimensional method developed to study the phenomenon of fatigue crack propagation in functionally graded materials (FGMs). The particular problem examined in detail is that of an initially-elliptical crack located in a functionally graded medium, subjected to mode I cyclic loading. The crack is modelled by employing three dimensional finite elements; and the stress intensity factors (SIFs) around the crack front are computed by the application of the d...
