Sedimentological, cyclostratigraphical and sequence stratigraphical analysis of cretaceous Üzümlü formation (NW Turkey)
Keskinler, Salih Yiğit; Yılmaz, İsmail Ömer; Department of Geological Engineering (2007)
High resolution sampling was performed along the Üzümlü Formation exposed near the Yeniceşıhlar village of Mudurnu (Bolu). Field and thin-section analyses showed that the Üzümlü Formation is composed of cm to m scale cycles of 4th and 5th order. The 4th order cycles are equivalencies of parasequences and have 0.4 Ma average duration. 5th order cycles are interpreted as episodic. Upper Albian (OAE1c or OAE1d) and Cenomanian/Turonian (OAE2) anoxic events are observed as black shale levels in the studied secti...
Sequence stratigraphic architecture of Mut basin along ramp to reefal margin transition and its diagenetic imprint
Derman, H. Armağan; Norman, Teoman; Department of Geological Engineering (2003)
The whole Mediterranean was a site of carbonate deposition during Miocene. Unlike other Miocene basins in the Mediteranean, the importance of Mut Basin lies in its tectonically undisturbed nature that provides excellent exposures to study sequence stratigraphic architecture and carbonate sedimentology. Opening of Mut Basin began during Oligocene; carbonate deposition started during Early Miocene. The pre-Miocene rocks are characterized by (from bottom to top), 1. ophiolites and Mesozoic limestones, 2. Eocen...
Erosional truncation of uppermost Permian shallow-marine carbonates and implications for Permian-Triassic boundary events
Payne, Jonathan L.; Lehrmann, Daniel J.; Follett, David; Seibel, Margaret; Kump, Lee R.; Riccardi, Anthony; Altıner, Demir; Sano, Hiroyoshi; Wei, Jiayong (Geological Society of America, 2007-07-01)
On shallow-marine carbonate buildups in south China, Turkey, and Japan, uppermost Permian skeletal limestones are truncated by an erosional surface that exhibits as much as 10 cm of topography, including overhanging relief. Sedimentary facies, microfabrics, carbon isotopes, and cements together suggest that erosion occurred in a submarine setting. Moreover, biostratigraphic data from south China demonstrate that the surface postdates the uppermost Permian sequence boundary at the global stratotype section a...
Mineralization events in a collision-related setting: The central anatolian crystalline complex, Turkey
Kuscu, I; Erler, A (Informa UK Limited, 1998-06-01)
Examination of mineral deposits in the Central Anatolian Crystalline Complex provides broad new insights regarding their genesis. Collision- and post-collision-related magmatic processes during closure of the northern branch of the Neotethyan Ocean, caused by northward subduction of the oceanic crust beneath the Sakarya Microcontinent in the Late Cretaceous-Eocene, led to the formation of several types of mineral deposits. These include: (1) skarn-type deposits (Pb-Zn, Fe, and Fe-W skarns); (2) vein-type de...
Microfacies analysis of upper devonian - lower carboniferous shallow water carbonates of the Yilanli formation in Zonguldak area, North Western, Turkey
Ahmed, Nouman; Yılmaz, İsmail Ömer; Department of Geological Engineering (2016)
The Yılanlı Formation of Upper Devonian to Lower Carboniferous succession of the Zonguldak region were measured from Gökgöl section near Zonguldak city, NW Turkey. The studied section dominantly consists of limestone of grey – dark grey color with thin to thick beds of black shale and claystone. A variety of lithofacies identified in the studied section including limestone, dolomite, shale, claystone and mudstone. Nine microfacies are identified as grainstone, packstone, wackstone, mudstone, bindstone, ruds...
