SPATIAL AND SEASONAL VARIATIONS IN SOUTHERN BLACK SEA PHYTOPLANKTON SIZE CLASSES

This study investigates the spatial and seasonal variations in phytoplankton size classes across the southern Black Sea basin. HPLC pigment analysis of samples collected in December 2022 (winter) and June 2023 (summer) will be used to characterize phytoplankton communities. The focus will be on identifying shifts in size class distribution (pico -, nano-, microphytoplankton) between the seasons. Understanding these variations is crucial for elucidating the dynamics of primary productivity and biogeochemical cycles in the Black Sea. The short-term variability data encompassing the entire southern Black Sea basin will provide insights into potential environmental drivers influencing phytoplankton size structure. The research contributes tounderstanding the seasonal response of the Black Sea's phytoplankton community and its role.
