In 2003, METU Northern Cyprus Campus was established

Middle East Technical University (METU) was invited by the governments of the Republic of Turkey and the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus to establish an international campus as part of the transformation of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus into an educational hub. The METU Northern Cyprus Campus project was initiated with a protocol signed on March 27, 2000, between the government of the Republic of Turkey, the government of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus, and the METU Rectorate, making Middle East Technical University the first Turkish university to establish a campus abroad. The agreement was signed by the then Prime Minister of the Republic of Turkey, Bülent Ecevit, and the President of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus, Rauf Denktaş. This framework protocol was ratified by the Grand National Assembly of Turkey on June 27, 2001, with Law No. 4695.
