The account’s of participants were analysed according to Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis (IPA) guidelines and this process resulted in four themes: (1) First Encounters With TTRPGs: Illumination Recognition, and Continuity, (2) Constructing a Self: Background, Choice, and Becoming-in-Play, (3) Playing to Cope: Social Bonds, Escapism, and the Safety of Fiction and (4) Agency and Consequence: Shaping the World Through Play.
