Effect of extracellular polymer composition of activated sludge on the removal of heavy metals by biosorption
Yüncü, Bilgen; Yetiş, Ülkü; Sanin, F. Dilek; Department of Environmental Engineering (2003)
Activated sludge microorganisms can remove many hazardous substances from wastewater by adsorbing and concentrating them on their surfaces. Biosorption of these substances onto activated sludge surfaces are influenced by the chemical properties of the substance in question as well as the surface properties of the microorganisms. The purpose of this study is to identify the biosorption mechanisms of heavy metals and the effect of extracellular polymer (ECP) composition of activated sludge on the biosorption ...
Removal of lead using anaerobic biomass
Tokcaer, Emre; Yetiş, Ülkü; Department of Environmental Engineering (2003)
Use of anaerobically digested sludge (ADS) in heavy metal removal, was researched. The raw and dewatered ADS samples collected from the effluent of anaerobic digesters and mechanical dewatering units of Ankara City Wastewater Treatment Plant were used. Sorption kinetic and equilibrium tests were conducted using raw ADS at initial pH of 2.0, 4.0 and without adjusting the initial pH. The highest Pb(II) removal capacity was observed as, 8.5 mmol (or 1760 mg) Pb(II) per g of biomass, when the initial pH was not...
Kinetic aspects of decolorization of pulp and paper industry wastewaters by algae

Evaluation of dewatered and partially dried sewage sludge combustion based on energy balance and carbon footprint
Calbay, Emin; Aksoy, Ayşegül; Sanin, Faika Dilek; Department of Environmental Engineering (2018)
Aim of this thesis is to evaluate dewatered (wet) and partially dried sludge combustion, based on energy balance, carbon footprint and cost estimations. Thermal processes have advantage of converting sludge into energy. Transition from environmentally risky disposal methods to environmentally friendly innovative thermal processes is crucial. Until innovative technologies are proven to be robust and efficient, mono-incineration is evaluated as the transition technology in sludge management. Sufficient data a...
Surface energy and excess charge in (1x2)-reconstructed rutile TiO2(110) from DFT plus U calculations
Unal, Hatice; METE, ERSEN; Ellialtıoğlu, Süleyman Şinasi (2011-09-09)
Physically reasonable electronic structures of reconstructed rutile TiO2(110)-(1x2) surfaces were studied using density functional theory (DFT) supplemented with Hubbard U on-site Coulomb repulsion acting on the d electrons, the so called DFT + U approach. Two leading reconstruction models proposed by Onishi and Iwasawa [Surf. Sci. Lett. 313, 783 (1994)] and Park and coworkers [Phys. Rev. B 75, 245415 (2007)] were compared in terms of their thermodynamic stabilities.
