Migration is a significant phenomenon worldwide and has its positive and negative implications for the host states. The research explores the case of Afghan influx to Pakistan to depict the socioeconomic and security implications for Pakistan as the host state. The research uncovers how the Afghan refugees have impacted the security and the socio-economic fabric of Pakistan. The research covers the case from historical context till contemporary times. The research explores how Pakistan policy has transformed from 1979 being open door to restrictive post 9/11 and post 2014 while the current is the closed-door policy. The research also provides insights on the transnational narratives and media portrayal of Pakistan‟s recent deportation drive bringing the debate of human security vs national security. The main argument of the thesis is as follows: security marks the major reason for Pakistan to close its doors for the Afghans and the growing Delhi-Afghan nexus further strengthened Pakistan‟s position in the matter aiming to protect its territory from external security threats. The crucial role that Pakistan as the host state has played for several decades created very heavy burden on Pakistan‟s security and economy. The realist school of thought better explains the case uncovering how the refugees cause security and socioeconomic consequences for the host states.
