Processing and characterization of porous titanium nickel shape memory alloys
Aydoğmuş, Tarık; Bor, Şakir; Ögel, Bilgehan; Department of Metallurgical and Materials Engineering (2010)
Porous TiNi alloys (Ti-50.4 at. %Ni and Ti-50.6 at. %Ni) with porosities in the range 21%-81% were prepared successfully applying a new powder metallurgy fabrication route in which magnesium was used as space holder resulting in either single austenite phase or a mixture of austenite and martensite phases dictated by the composition of the starting prealloyed powders but entirely free from secondary brittle intermetallics, oxides, nitrides and carbonitrides. Magnesium vapor do not only prevents secondary ph...
Design and implementation of high fill factor structures on low-cost uncooled infrared sensors
Ertürk, Ozan; Akın, Tayfun; Department of Electrical and Electronics Engineering (2015)
This thesis presents the design and implementation steps of high fill factor structures for existing SOI diode low-cost microbolometer FPAs. Advancements in uncooled infrared detectors enable high performance military grade uncooled microbolometers as well as ultra-low-cost infrared imagers for civilian applications. The trend in uncooled microbolometers to reduce the pixel pitch has become increasingly significant to lower the cost of detector and system integration due to optics, and increase spatial reso...
Development of a miniaturized automated production control system
Korkmaz, Özgür; Kılıç, S. Engin; Department of Mechanical Engineering (2012)
In this thesis a custom embedded system and control software developed for an Automated Storage and Retrieval System (AS/RS) which is based on the Computer Integrated Manufacturing Laboratory (CIMLAB) located in the Department of Mechanical Engineering, Middle East Technical University. Primary objective of this study is AS/RSs related control rules can be applicable to the current physical system. The secondary objective is determined as developing the control system in a flexible way that allows adding ne...
Development and characterization of low-cost uncooled infrared sensors for commercial applications
Tankut, Firat; Akın, Tayfun; Eminoğlu, Selim; Department of Electrical and Electronics Engineering (2013)
This thesis reports the study on the development and characterization of low-cost uncooled microbolometer type infrared detectors, which are fabricated using standard CMOS and MEMS processes. Characterization of the detectors is the first step of developing infrared sensors with better performance. The characterized pixel has a 70 μm pitch and includes 4 serially connected diodes as the detector circuit. Thermal conductance (Gth), temperature sensitivity (TC) and, optical absorption are measured in scope of...
Simulation of nest assessment behavior by ant scouts
Şahin, Erol (2002-01-01)
The scouts of Leptothorax albipennis colonies find and assess new nest sites, when their current nests become uninhabitable. Observations of these scouts have suggested that they assess, among other things, the integrity of the internal periphery and the size of the potential nest site. The hypothesis that the scouts use a ‘Buffon’s needle algorithm’ to estimate the nest size is supported by experiments. In this paper, we present a behavioral model for the nest assessment of the scouts. This behavior is imp...
