The traffic and transportation sector is a major contributor to global climate change, and reducing its impact calls for the sustainable mobility (SM) paradigm. The SM literature has largely concerned itself with transforming systems into more environmentally sound ones, treating people primarily as adopters who decide whether to use a given system. The present study goes further and focuses on the human factor, specifically how individuals behave during e-scooter use, as a determinant of SM. It develops a comprehensive measure of e-scooter user behavior, then examines the sustainable behaviors that individuals engage in throughout daily life as a disposition shaping that behavior. It also introduces personality traits as a moderator of this relationship for the first time. Study 1 used semi-structured interviews with 10 e-scooter users to develop the Electric Scooter User Behavior Questionnaire (eSUBQ), an instrument grounded in user experience rather than adapted from driver frameworks. The eSUBQ introduces a sustainability dimension with no precedent in existing micromobility tools, the first time a behavioral scale in the field has incorporated sustainability-focused conduct. Study 2 collected self-report data from 1,038 participants. Every dimension of sustainable behaviors was related to Safe & Positive Behaviors, with more selective associations for Risky Behaviors & Violations and Errors & Mistakes. Largely Conscientiousness, Extraversion, Neuroticism, and Negative Valence moderated these associations. Most importantly, no personality interaction emerged for Safe & Positive Behaviors, indicating that this spillover holds across all riders and positioning prosocial conduct as a possible dimension of the human factor in SM.
