Tsunami induced wave and current amplification and sedimentation in closed basins
Kian, Rozita; Yalçıner, Ahmet Cevdet; Department of Civil Engineering (2015)
Wave and current amplification inside the basins are related to different parameters. Wave period is one of the important parameters which governs the amplification inside the basins. If the period of incident wave coincides with one of the periods of free oscillations in the basin then resonant oscillation and amplification happens. Resonance inside harbors due to tsunami waves can exacerbate the damages by amplifying the water level changes, and currents. This phenomenon is important and cause unexpected ...
Tsunami focusing and leading amplitude
Kanoğlu, Utku (2016-12-12)
Tsunamis transform substantially through spatial and temporal spreading from their source region. This substantial spreading might result unique maximum tsunami wave heights which might be attributed to the source configuration, directivity, the waveguide structures of mid-ocean ridges and continental shelves, focusing and defocusing through submarine seamounts, random focusing due to small changes in bathymetry, dispersion, and, most likely, combination of some of these effects. In terms of the maximum tsu...
Tsunami hazards associated with explosion-collapse processes of a dome complex on Minoan Thera
Minoura, K; Imamura, E; Kuran, U; Nakamura, T; Papadopoulos, GA; Takahashi, T; Yalçıner, Ahmet Cevdet (2003-01-01)
The Minoan Thera eruption of the Bronze Age is the most significant Aegean explosive volcanism. The eruption resulted in caldera collapse. We studied the Minoan volcano-tectonic event from the viewpoint of sedimentology and hydraulics. On the Aegean Sea coast of Turkey and Crete we found traces of tsunamis. The tsunami layers are overlain by felsic tephra. The mineralogical characteristics of volcanic tephra and AMS radiocarbon dating on foraminiferal tests show that the tsunami layers are correlative to th...
Tsunami forecast modeling for Turkish coastlines
Sharghivand, Naeimeh; Kanoğlu, Utku; Department of Engineering Sciences (2014)
Turkish coastlines have been exposed to devastating tsunamis in the past. Today, Turkey has densely populated shorelines with substantial touristic activities and critical infrastructures along its shorelines. Tsunami propagation database and tsunami forecast models for the coastal communities are the two major components of the tsunami forecasting methodology which is developed by the United States National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration Center for Tsunami Research (NCTR) at the Pacifi c Marine Env...
Tsunami focusing and leading wave height
Kanoğlu, Utku (null; 2016-04-17)
Field observations from tsunami events show that sometimes the maximum tsunami amplitude might not occur for the first wave, such as the maximum wave from the 2011 Japan tsunami reaching to Papeete, Tahiti as a fourth wave 72 min later after the first wave. This might mislead local authorities and give a wrong sense of security to the public. Recently, Okal and Synolakis (2016, Geophys. J. Int. 204, 719-735) discussed "the factors contributing to the sequencing of tsunami waves in the far field." They consi...
