Appearance reconstruction of three dimensional models from real images
Yilmaz, U; Mulayim, AY; Atalay, Mehmet Volkan (2002-10-30)
An image based model reconstruction system is described. Real images of a rigid object acquired under a simple but controlled environment are used to recover the three dimensional geometry and the surface appearance. Based on a multi-image calibration method, an algorithm to extract the rotation axis of a turn-table has been developed. Furthermore, this can be extended to estimate robustly the initial bounding volume of the object to be modeled. The coarse volume obtained, is then carved using a stereo corr...
Shape models based on elliptic PDES, associated energies, and their applications in 2D and 3D
Gençtav, Aslı; Tarı, Zehra Sibel; Can, Tolga; Department of Computer Engineering (2018)
By using an elliptic PDE or its modifications, we develop implicit shape representations and demonstrate their two- and three-dimensional applications. In the first part of the thesis, we present a novel shape characterization field that provides a local measure of roundness at each shape point. The field is computed by comparing the solution of the elliptic PDE on the shape domain and the solution of the same PDE on the reference disk. We demonstrate its potential via illustrative applications including gl...
Shape recognition with generalized beam angle statistics
Tola, OO; Arica, N; Yarman-Vural, F (2004-01-01)
In this study, we develop a new shape descriptor and a matching algorithm in order to find a given template shape in an edge detected image without extracting the boundary. The shape descriptor based on Generalized Beam Angle Statistics (GBAS) defines the angles between the lines connecting each boundary point with the rest of the points, as random variable. Then, it assigns a feature vector to each point using the moments of beam angles. The proposed matching algorithm performs shape recognition by matchin...

Shape Patterns in Digital Fabrication: A Survey on Negative Poisson’s Ratio Metamaterials
Yılmaz, Bengisu; Adanova, Venera; Acar, Rüyam; Tarı, Zehra Sibel (Springer, 2018)
Poisson’s ratio for solid materials is defined as the ratio of the lateral length shrinkage to the longitudinal part extension on a simple tension test. While Poisson’s ratio for almost every material in nature is a positive number, materials having negative Poisson’s ratio may be engineered. We survey computational works toward design and fabrication of negative Poisson’s ratio materials focusing on shape patterns from macro to micro scale. Specifically, we cover folding, knitting, and repeatedly ordering ...
