Using zipf frequencies as a representativeness measure in statistical active learning of natural language
Çobanoğlu, Onur; Bozşahin, Hüseyin Cem; Department of Computer Engineering (2008)
Active learning has proven to be a successful strategy in quick development of corpora to be used in statistical induction of natural language. A vast majority of studies in this field has concentrated on finding and testing various informativeness measures for samples; however, representativeness measures for samples have not been thoroughly studied. In this thesis, we introduce a novel representativeness measure which is, being based on Zipf's law, model-independent and validated both theoretically and em...
Using Rasch measurement to evaluate the Organizational Climate Index
Börkan, Bengü; Çapa Aydın, Yeşim; Fıgueıredo, Claudıa; Loadman, Wıllıam E (null; 2003-10-18)
School climate has been acknowledged as a construct with impact on important aspects of educational outcomes, such as student achievement, school effectiveness, and school completion. The Organizational Climate Index was an instrument developed to measure school climate (W.Hoy, 2001). This study evaluated this instrument by using Rasch measurement. The sample consisted of 110 teachers in 4 schools. Results indicate that items generally were working well, with a high reliability of 0/96. The only two items o...
Using chains of bottleneck transitions to decompose and solve reinforcement learning tasks with hidden states
Aydın, Hüseyin; Çilden, Erkin; Polat, Faruk (2022-08-01)
Reinforcement learning is known to underperform in large and ambiguous problem domains under partial observability. In such cases, a proper decomposition of the task can improve and accelerate the learning process. Even ambiguous and complex problems that are not solvable by conventional methods turn out to be easier to handle by using a convenient problem decomposition, followed by the incorporation of machine learning methods for the sub-problems. Like in most real-life problems, the decomposition of a ta...

Using software quality characteristics to measure business process quality
Guceglioglu, AS; Demirörs, Onur (2005-01-01)
Organizations frequently use product based organizational performance models to measure the effects of information system (IS) on their organizations. This paper introduces a complementary process based approach that is founded on measuring business process quality attributes. These quality attributes are defined on the basis of ISO/IEC 9126 Software Product Quality Model. The new process quality attributes are applied in an experiment and results are discussed in the paper.
