Polymerization and characterization of poly(ethyl methacrylate)
Bakioğlu, Levent; Usanmaz, Ali; Department of Polymer Science and Technology (2003)
In this study, ethyl methacrylate was polymerized by free radical polymerization at 600C, 700C, 800C at open atmosphere; atom transfer radical polymerization, (ATRP), at 800C in vacuum and in gamma irradiation in vacuum. The polymer obtained was white, hard material. The kinetic curves for free radical polymerization and ATRP by gamma radiation were S-type. However, the curve for polymerization by gamma irradiation raises more smoothly. For ATRP by thermal initiation gives a lineer change of conversion with...
Polymerization and characterization of isobutyl methacrylate
İnci, Esin; Usanmaz, Ali; Department of Chemistry (2002)
Methacrylic polymers possess a remarkable combination of useful properties, including coatings, adhesives, textiles, oil additives, biomedical appliances, and optical applications. The monomer polymerizes rapidly and readily. In this study, the polymerization of isobutyl methacrylate was studied in bulk and solution by gamma radiation. The polymerization in bulk form was carried in vacuum and in open atmosphere. The polymerization curves showed S-type behavior and auto acceleration. The polymers obtained we...
Polymerization and characterization of allyl methacrylate
Vardareli, Tuğba; Usanmaz, Ali; Department of Polymer Science and Technology (2006)
Allyl methacrylate, AMA was polymerized by chemical initiator and by γ-radiation under different conditions. The polymer obtained is mostly gel type with some soluble fractions at lower conversions. Arrhenius activation energy is 82.3 kJ/mol for chemical initiated polymerization. The polymer was characterized by FT-IR, NMR, DSC, TGA, XPS, XRD, DLS, and MS methods. It was found that about 98-99% of allyl side groups retained as pendant even after completion of the polymerization, while 1-2% may give crosslin...
Polymerization of N-Vinylcaprolactam and Characterization of Poly(N-Vinylcaprolactam)
Kozanoglu, Selin; Ozdemir, Tonguc; Usanmaz, Ali (2011-01-01)
Poly(N-vinylcaprolactam), PNVCL, is a nonionic, nontoxic, water soluble, thermally sensitive and biocompatible polymer. It contains hydrophilic carboxylic and amide groups with hydrophobic carbon-carbon backbone suitable for biomedical applications. In this study, N-vinylcaprolactam was polymerized by free radical polymerization at 50, 60 and 70 degrees C. The synthesized polymers were white powder, soluble in water and common organic solvents. The percent conversion vs. time plot is almost linear up to abo...
Polymerization and characterization of 2-Hydroxyethyl acrylate
Vargün, Elif; Usanmaz, Ali; Department of Polymer Science and Technology (2003)
Poly(2-Hydroxyethyl acrylate), PHEA, is used as hydrophilic polymeric gels which have been studied because of its great importance for agricultural or biomedical applications. Biomedical applications of hydrogels include soft contact lenses, artificial corneas, soft tissue substitutes and burn dressings. In this study, it was aimed to synthesis the polymers with well-defined molecular weights, polydispersities and cahin topologies. Bulk, solution and atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) techniques at...
