Effect of process parameters on mechanical properties of high pressure die cast magnesium AZ91 components
Okcu, Işık Yılmaz; Kalkanlı, Ali; Department of Metallurgical and Materials Engineering (2011)
Before beginning the experimental work of this study, a magnesium high pressure die casting facility is set up to manufacture magnesium cast parts for defence industry. In this thesis two components are cold chamber high pressure die casted using magnesium alloy AZ91 as raw material, and one component was manufactured using both aluminium alloy A.413, and magnesium alloy AZ91. Mechanical properties of high pressure die casting parts depend on various parameters such as, thickness of the cast part, position ...
Effect of cold rolling and annealing parameters on the microstructure and mechanical properties of dual phase steels
Poyraz, Okan; Ögel, Bilgehan; Department of Metallurgical and Materials Engineering (2020)
This study consists of change in the microstructure and mechanical properties of the 0.14C-1.98Mn steel with different cold rolling ratios, annealing temperature and annealing time. The starting sheet metal is 2.8mm thick and have a microstructure of ferrite-pearlite in as-received condition. Samples are cold rolled such that either 30%, 45% or 60% cold rolling is achieved. In order to see the change in microstructure below and in the intercritical temperatures, samples are annealed for 5 minutes or 10 minu...
Effect of shock loading on the microstructure, mechanical properties and grain boundary characteristics of HT-9 ferritic/martensitic steels
Aydoğan Güngör, Eda; Maloy, S. A.; Livescu, V.; Gray, G. T.; Perez-Bergquist, S.; Williams, D. J. (2016-01-01)
The microstructural changes and mechanical response of an HT-9 sample shock loaded to a peak pressure of 11 GPa have been investigated by TEM, XRD, microhardness and EBSD techniques. Dislocation densities obtained by both direct measurements (via TEM) and indirect calculations (by XRD and hardness) indicate that shock loading results in similar to 2-3 fold increase in dislocation density. TEM analyses show that the shape, and density of the dislocations change after shock loading. In addition, shock loading...
Effect of fiber and resin types on mechanical properties of fiber-reinforced composite pipe
Gokce, Neslihan; Yılmazer, Ülkü; SUBAŞI, SERKAN (Thomas Telford Ltd., 2019-09-01)
The aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of the types of fiber and resin on the mechanical properties of polyester composite pipes. Orthophthalic, isophthalic and vinyl ester resins were used as the matrix; E-glass, electrical/chemical resistance (ECR)-glass and basalt fibers were used as reinforcement; and 98% silica (SiO2) sand was used as filler in mixtures. Samples were produced by the centrifugal casting method. Samples cut from the produced pipes were tested to determine stiffness and longitu...
Effect of welding parameters on the hot cracking behavior of 7039 aluminum - zinc alloy
Akkuş, Mert; Gürbüz, Rıza; Batıgün, Caner; Department of Metallurgical and Materials Engineering (2010)
7039 aluminum alloys are widely being used in the aerospace, automotive and defense industries in which welding technique is used for their joining. The main problem encountered during the welding of 7039 aluminum alloy is hot cracking. The aim of this study is to understand the effect of welding parameters on the hot cracking behavior of 7039 aluminum alloy by using Modified Varestraint Test (MVT) with Gas Tunsgten Arc Welding (GTAW) technique. During tests, welding speed was selected as varying parameter,...
