Studies on chiral spiropyran derivatives
Şentürk, Bengi; Akdağ, Akın; Department of Chemistry (2021-8-13)
Spiropyrans are a class of organic molecules that possess photochromic characteristics. Their isomerization to the merocyanine form can be induced by light, heat, polarity, and pH of the environment. The merocyanine form is obtained from the heterolytic cleavage of the bond between spiro carbon and the oxygen, which results in a transformation of the optically active spiropyrans into an achiral form. The back conversion of the achiral merocyanine to the spiropyrans leads to racemization. In this study, D an...

Studies on photochemical vapor generation of selenium
Çetmeli , Melis; Ertaş, Gülay; Department of Chemistry (2019)
Selenium is a significant trace element for human health. Selenium can be essential or toxic for human body depending on its concentration. Within the scope of this thesis, photochemical vapor generation tungsten coil atomization technique has been studied for the determination of selenium. Volatile selenium compounds were generated by exposure of UV light of the solution containing selenium and acetic acid. To increase sensitivity of photochemical vapor generation system, the technique was combined with tu...

Studies on the mechanism of base-catalyzed decomposition of bicyclic endoperoxides
Mete, E; Altundas, R; Secen, H; Balcı, Metin (2003-01-01)
Kinetic studies were performed to clarify the Kornblum-Delamare reaction mechanism of bicyclic endoperoxides. Ascaridol and 1,4-diphenyl-2,3-dioxa-bicyclo[2.2.2]oct-5-ene, not having alpha-protons, did not provide any reaction with bases. Reaction with different bases has revealed that reaction rates for the base-catalyzed decomposition of 2,3-dioxa-bicyclo[2.2.2]oct-5-ene depend strongly on the base strength. The stronger the base used, the faster the conversion rate. Reaction rate values k of endoperoxide...
