Detection of helminth eggs and protozoan cysts in wastewaters

Davutluoğlu, Ayten
The withdrawal of water sources concluded the reuse of treated wastewaters, especially for non-potable purposes. Agricultural use of the reclaimed wastewaters is one of the reuse options. However health considerations of the reuse of reclaimed wastewaters for public related purposes are underestimated, since wastewaters contain a variety of microbial pathogens, which may be transmitted to workers and consumers through the crops irrigated. Of these, parasitic eggs have a special place, as they are capable of surviving in the soil for months or even years, depending on environmental conditions. There is insufficient accumulated information on the health related criteria for the reuse of treated wastewaters in Turkey. The aim of this study was therefore to determine the helminthic eggs in raw sewage and in effluents of ASKI municipal wastewater treatment plant in Ankara. The study involved examining to decide whether these organisms exist in the wastewaters at all, and if so in what concentrations. Modified Bailenger̕s method, which published in the أWHO Laboratory Manual of Parasitological and Bacteriological Techniquesؤ and أU.S.EPA ICR Microbial Laboratory Manualؤ were used in developing the specific methods used in this study.

The main objective of this study is to optimise a new composite for the depollution of contaminated water. This pollution can have adverse effects on both human health and the environment. The aim of this work was the elaboration and characterisation of a Novel polyaniline composite with plant leaf powder of Heliotrope (PANI@HL) for the removal of Orange G dye in an aqueous media. Hence, the physicochemical and morphological composition of PANI@HL were characterised by field-emission-scanning-electron-micro...
Characterization of lead-resistant river isolate Enterococcus faecalis and assessment of its multiple metal and antibiotic resistance
Aktan, Yasin; Tan, Sema; İçgen, Bülent (Springer Science and Business Media LLC, 2013-06-01)
Contamination of surface waters has a direct impact on the public health of entire communities. Microorganisms inhabiting contaminated surface waters have developed mechanisms of coping with a variety of toxic metals and drugs. Investigations were carried out to isolate and identify lead-resistant bacteria from the river KA +/- zA +/- lA +/- rmak along the city of KA +/- rA +/- kkale, Turkey. Of the 33 lead-resistant isolates, one isolate with a minimal inhibitory concentration of 1,200 mg L-1 was isolated ...
Investigation of adsorption of pesticides by organo-zeolite from wastewater
Lüle, Güzide Meltem; Atalay, M Ümit; Özbayoğlu, Gülhan; Department of Mining Engineering (2011)
The aim of this study was to determine the adsorption capacity of activated carbon and organo-zeolites for removal of pesticides in water. In order to prepare organo-zeolite, two kinds of cationic surfactants, namely, hexadecyltrimethyl ammonium bromide (HTAB) and dodecyltrimethyl ammonium bromide (DTAB) were used. Adsorption studies of cationic surfactant on zeolite were investigated in respect to initial concentration of cationic surfactant, time, and temperature. It has been found that the best fitted is...
Analysis of polyphenol oxidase production by southern pine beetle associated fungi
Valiev, Abduvali; Ögel, Zümrüt Begüm; Department of Food Engineering (2007)
In this study, two symbiotic fungi of Southern Pine Beetle (SPB), Entomocorticium peryii and Entomocorticium sp.A were evaluated in terms of polyphenol oxidase (PPO) production. The effect of different inhibitors, inducers and assay parameters such as temperature and pH on enzyme activity were investigated and maximum PPO activity was observed at 30°C, pH 8.0 and when tannic acid was used as an inducer. Copper-chelator salicyl hydroxamic acid (SHAM) and pcoumaric acid, both indicated as inhibitors of tyrosi...
Fate and removal of pesticides in wastewater treatment plants –case of Yeşilirmak basin
Kocaman, Kumru; Dilek, Filiz Bengü; Yetiş, Ülkü; Department of Environmental Engineering (2019)
The effluent of wastewater treatment plants (WWTP) had been shown to be a significant source of micropollutants in surface waters. In this study, the aim was to investigate the biological treatment of commonly found micropollutants in Yeşilırmak river basin, with special emphasis on the effects of operational conditions on their removal in conventional biological WWTPs. Based on the monitoring results of TÜBİTAK project (115Y013) “Management of Point and Diffuse Pollutant Sources in Yeşilırmak River Basin” ...
