Numerical dam break analyses of Kirazliköprü Dam are performed under various hydraulic scenarios. Kirazliköprü Dam is located on the Gökirmak River near the city of Bartin. The objective of these analyses is to investigate adverse effects of such dam break failure on the regions downstream of the dam. The numerical model used in the simulations is FLDWAV, which is developed by the National Weather Service (NWS) in the United States. It appears that most adversely effected regions are those that are closest to the dam location. The results of these simulations can be used sufficiently to prepare emergency action plans in case of possible failures.

Concrete faced rockfıll dam (CFRD) is an increasingly favoured dam type in the world along with the RCC dams. The design procedure for CFRDs, based on past experience, was significantly questioned after the poor performance of a number of recently built systems. The performance of CFRDs under earthquake were deemed exquisite; however, this preposition is hard to verify due to the scarcity of CFRDs subjected to very strong ground motions. The significance of this study stems from the determination of the wor...

In this study, Bahçelik Dam, which is located in Kayseri Province, is investigated by means of horizontal movement due to reservoir loading and seepage inside the core and body. Two dimensional plain strain finite element analyses are carried out in order to find total stresses, displacements and pore water pressures. Mohr-coulomb soil model is used to represent elastic behavior of rock-fill material. Since there is no information about material used in dam body, material parameters are determined by sensit...
Two-dimensional dam break analyses of Berdan dam

Dam break analyses of Berdan Dam were performed to determine the potential risk areas of floodplain and to help the preparation of emergency action plans. Digital elevation model created from bathymetric maps, flow hydrograph obtained for catastrophic condition, and sub-regions classified by land cover maps were integrated into HEC-RAS model. The reservoir of Berdan Dam and two-dimensional flow area was created on GIS-based geometric data which was converted from the digital elevation model to a triangulate...
Performance of concrete gravity dams under earthquake effects
Soysal, Berat Feyza; Arıcı, Yalın; Department of Civil Engineering (2014)
Concerns about the seismic safety of gravity dams have increased with the construction of numerous new dams in the developing world as well as the need for the evaluation of existing dam stock in the developed countries. The common procedure for the design of concrete gravity dams has been linear analyses: there is scant experience on the design of such systems using nonlinear analyses as the post-linear behavior and performance limits of gravity dam monoliths are not well known. This study is focused on th...
NUMERICAL INVESTIGATION OF 2D DAM-BREAK FAILURES BY USING GIS APPLICATIONS

In this study, the dam-break analysis of Ondokuz Mayıs Dam, İhsaniye Dam, and Avcıdere Dam is performed using full momentum HEC-RAS and dynamic wave FLO-2D model. The breach hydrograph for each dam was obtained by modeling the reservoir with dynamic wave routing in HEC-RAS. Three breach hydrographs (S1, S2, and S3) were calculated for each dam using a different set of breach parameters. The breach hydrographs were routed over the floodplain using both HEC-RAS and FLO-2D models. For Ondokuz Mayıs Dam, an acc...
