Ulusal, Nejat
Ankara Wind Tunnel (AWT) operated by TÜBİTAK-SAGE is the only big sized wind tunnel in Turkey. The AWT was constructed in late 1940̕s but was not operated until 1993 when the tunnel was turned over TÜBİTAK-SAGE. Since 1993, a series of modernization work has been undergoing in order to match the demands of the 21st century. In wind tunnels, models are positioned by special mechanisms that are instrumented to get the test data specific to the test performed. Models are assembled from their rear sides on these mechanisms called model support systems in order not to influence the flow around them. In this thesis, a conceptual design of a 6 degrees-of-freedom model support system for AWT is accomplished. A detailed system model is developed for the controller design. A force controller to perform store separation tests in real time is designed, tuned, and validated with computer simulations.

Modeling and control of a stabilization system
Afacan, Kamil; Balkan, Raif Tuna; Department of Mechanical Engineering (2004)
Elevation axis model of a barrel stabilization system is constructed. The nonlinearities which are considered in the model are orifice flow characteristics, coulomb friction, hard-stop limits, kinematics of the system and unbalance on the barrel. A Simulink® model for the servo valve, actuation system and barrel is constructed. Servo valve identification is made via the actual test data. Compressibility of the hydraulic fluid is taken into consideration while modeling the actuation system. Friction model is...
Design considerations for modern railway stations; comparing Berlin, Beijing and Ankara
Atak, Zeynep; Elias Özkan, Soofia Tahira; Department of Building Science in Architecture (2015)
High Speed train era in Turkey has started in 2009 with the Ankara-Eskisehir high speed rail line. From 2009 until 2015, a number of high speed railway and new station construction projects haves been implemented. And new high speed rail line projects are in planned. Location of the station in the city, its dimensions, security check points, ticket checking system, the size of the retail places within the station and some other functions are critical for the design of railway stations, however it is realize...
Determination of the rock mass characteristics and support systems of the new Ulus Tunnel, Ankara
Aksular, Irem; Doyuran, Vedat; Department of Geological Engineering (2008)
The New Ulus Tunnel will be constructed within the andesitic terrain at Hıdırlıktepe (Ankara). Excavation of the tunnel will be accomplished through blast and drill method. Emprical methods will be consulted during the design of the support systems as well as the slope of the portal rock face. Therefore it is essential to perform detailed rock mass characterization studies. In this thesis it is aimed to determine the rock mass characteristics in order to design the rock slope of the portals and to assess th...
Evaluation study on the instrumentation system of cindere dam
Yanmaz, Ali Melih (American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE), 2009-11-26)
The first hardfill dam in Turkey, Cindere Dam, has recently been constructed and a number of instruments have been installed. The aim of this study is to review the capability of the current instrumentation system and to observe the feasibility of possible alternative measurement systems. To this end, the current instrumentation system has been evaluated as a whole with reference to the parameters measured, instruments, and data acquisition system. Afterward, an alternative instrumentation system was develo...
Dynamic investigation and rehabilitation of existing railway truss bridge under high speed train loadings for passenger comfort
Mutlu, Gündüz; Yılmaz, Çetin; Department of Civil Engineering (2008)
In Turkey, big investments are made to improve the existing train lines for use of new high speed trains. Most of the bridges on the existing train lines are typical and in this thesis one of the standard types, the classic steel truss bridge is investigated. This thesis presents the dynamic investigation of standard type existing truss bridge for passenger comfort criteria under the high speed train loadings. Two different computational analysis models have been developed to idealize the vehicle-bridge mod...
