Buckling driven delamination of orthotropic functionally graded materials
Yılmaz, Suphi; Kadıoğlu, Fevzi Suat; Department of Mechanical Engineering (2006)
In today's technology severe working conditions increase demands on structural materials. A class of materials which are developed to meet these increased demands is Functionally Graded Materials (FGMs). These are inhomogeneous structural materials which are able to withstand large temperature gradients and corrosive environment. Application areas of FGMs are in aerospace industry, nuclear reactors, chemical plants and turbine systems. FGMs have gradual compositional variation from metal to ceramic which gi...
Buckling assessment of cylindrical steel tanks with top stiffening ring under wind loading
Zeybek, O.; Topkaya, Cem (2019-01-01)
A stiffening ring is commonly used at the top of the tank wall to increase its strength against external pressure instability. Traditional design treatments generally consider cylindrical storage tanks under uniform external pressure for sizing of the top ring. However, cylindrical steel tanks under non-uniform wind loading have rather different and complex buckling behaviour from those of tanks subjected to uniform external wind loading. In this study, the buckling resistance of the cylindrical steel stora...
Buckling, postbuckling and progressive failure analyses of composite laminated plates under compressive loading
Namdar, Omer; Darendeliler, Haluk (Elsevier BV, 2017-07-01)
In this study, buckling, post-buckling and progressive failure of composite laminated plates have been investigated numerically and experimentally. Buckling load, load-displacement relations for post buckling and maximum out-of-plane displacements of the plates are determined. Furthermore, the numerical results are compared with experimental findings for two different laminates made of woven fabric and uni-directional tapes. The comparisons show that there is a good agreement between numerical and experimen...
Buckling, postbuckling and progressive failure anaylses of composite laminated plates under compressive loading
Namdar, Ömer; Darendeliler, Haluk; Department of Mechanical Engineering (2012)
The aim of this thesis is to investigate buckling, post-buckling behaviors and failure characteristics of composite laminated plates under compressive loading with the help of finite element method and experiments. In the finite element analyses, eigen value extraction method is used to determine the critical buckling loads and nonlinear Riks and Newton-Raphson methods are employed to obtain post-buckling behaviors and failure loads. The effects of geometric imperfection amplitude on buckling and post-buckl...
Buckling of cross-ply laminated beams with arbitrary boundary conditions
Khdeir, AA; Reddy, JN (1997-01-01)
Analytical solutions of refined beam theories are developed to study the buckling behaviour of cross-ply rectangular beams with arbitrary boundary conditions. The state space concept in conjunction with Jordan canonical form will be used to solve exactly the governing equations of the buckling problems. The correlation between different shear deformation theories and the classical theory has been established. (C) 1997 Elsevier Science Ltd.
