Polymerization and characterization of allyl methacrylate

Vardareli, Tuğba
Allyl methacrylate, AMA was polymerized by chemical initiator and by γ-radiation under different conditions. The polymer obtained is mostly gel type with some soluble fractions at lower conversions. Arrhenius activation energy is 82.3 kJ/mol for chemical initiated polymerization. The polymer was characterized by FT-IR, NMR, DSC, TGA, XPS, XRD, DLS, and MS methods. It was found that about 98-99% of allyl side groups retained as pendant even after completion of the polymerization, while 1-2% may give crosslinking and/or cyclization that yields lactones and anhydrides. The spectroscopic and thermal results of the work showed that the reaction is not cyclopolymerization, but may have end group cyclization. Molecular weight of 1.1x106 was measured by DLS. Therefore, insolubility is due to the high molecular weight of polymer, even in the early stage of polymerization rather than crosslinking. The Tg of PAMA was observed as 94ºC before curing, upon curing at 150-200ºC, Tg increased to 211ºC as measured by DSC. The thermal treatment of polymer at about 350ºC gave anhydride by linkage type degradation, following side group cyclization. The XPS analysis showed the presence of radical fragments of AIBN and CCl4 associated with oligomers. The MS and TGA thermograms showed two or three stage degradations depending on solubility. The first stage was mostly linkage type degradation for the fragmentation of pendant allyl groups at 225-350ºC. In the second stage, at 395-515ºC, the degradation is random scission and depolymerization.

Polymerization and polymer characterization of acetylenedicarboxylic acid monopotassium salt
Anaçoğlu, Elif; Usanmaz, Ali; Department of Polymer Science and Technology (2005)
Acetylenedicarboxylic acid monopotassium salt, ADCA-K, was polymerized by radiation induced solid-state and chemical initiator induced solution polymerization methods. Radiation induced solid-state polymerization was carried out by Co-60 g-radiation at room temperature. The powder polymer obtained was soluble in water but insoluble in common organic solvents. The solution polymerization initiated by benzoylperoxide was carried out in an oil bath at 90°C. The polymer obtained was soluble in water but insolub...
Synthesis, characterization, and polymerization of polyether bridged thiophene and aniline derivatives
Tirkeş, Seha; Önal, Ahmet Muhtar; Department of Polymer Science and Technology (2008)
New compounds consisting of 3-thienyl and aniline units linked by polyether bridges have been synthesized and their electrochemical polymerization was performed via constant potential electrolysis and cyclic voltammetry. In the case of 3-thienyl derivatives two compounds, 1,12-di-3-thienyl-2,5,8,11-tetraoxadodecane (MI) and 1,15-di-3-thienyl-2,5,8,11,14-pentaoxapentadecane (MII) were synthesized utilizing literature methods and their corresponding polymers, poly(I) and poly(II) were prepared in an electroly...
Synthesis and characterization of polythiophene/montmorillonite and polythiophene/polypropylene composites
Dülgerbaki, Çiğdem; Küçükyavuz, Zuhal; Department of Chemistry (2006)
In this study, polythiophene(PTP)/montmorillonite(MMT) nanocomposites were synthesized by in situ intercalative polymerization and chemical oxidative polymerization. In in situ intercalative polymerization method, composites containing 90 and 95% MMT were prepared. In chemical oxidative polymerization method, a series of composites ranging from 1 to 15% by weight MMT were synthesized. Thermal and morphological properties of samples were investigated by Differential Scanning Calorimeter (DSC), Thermal Gravim...
Synthesis of a new thiophene derivative and its uses as an electrochromic device component
Yiğitsoy, Başak; Toppare, Levent Kamil; Department of Chemistry (2006)
2,5-Di(thiophen-2-yl)-1-p-tolyl-1H-pyrrole (DTTP) was synthesized via reaction of 1,4-di(2-thienyl)-1,4-butanedione with p-toluidine in the presence of catalytical amount of p-toluenesulfonic acid (PTSA). Homopolymer P(DTTP) was achieved both by chemical and electrochemical techniques. Chemical polymerization of the monomer yielded a soluble polymer. The average molecular weight was determined by gel permeation chromatography (GPC) as Mn: 2.5x103 g/mol. The monomer was electrochemically polymerized in the p...
Synthesis and characterization of polypyrrole nanoparticles and their nanocomposites with polypropylene
Baytekin, Sevil; Küçükyavuz, Zuhal; Department of Polymer Science and Technology (2009)
Conducting polypyrrole (PPy) nanoparticles were synthesized via microemulsion polymerization system. The characterization of PPy nanoparticles was done by Fourier transform infrared spectrometer (FTIR) and scanning electron microscope (SEM). Nanocomposites were prepared by melt-mixing of polypyrrole with polypropylene (PP) and processed with injection molding. The amount of PPy in nanocomposites varied in the range of 1-20% by weight. The effect of PPy nanoparticles on mechanical, electrical properties and ...
