This thesis presents design, fabrication and testing of a number of multi-frequency band microstrip-fed re-configurable microstrip patch antennas. All re-configurable antennas are designed to change from one resonance frequency to another by an electronic control of RF MEMS switches, one at a time. Besides a fixed size slot on the patch, switches are placed in insets for satisfying better input match at each resonance frequency individually. Also some switches are placed into the slot for adding another resonance frequency to change the effective slot-length like effective inset length changing. To actuate the RF MEMS switches in the configured way, DC-stubs are also designed to apply required potential difference between switch ports and the carrier. These stubs exhibit RF-open at switch side to prevent any RF leakage, and DCground on the other side. That RF short-to-open conversion is accomplished together with feed structure; with a taper depending on the feed network selected. All devices introduced here are built by Microwave Research Group in Electrical and Electronics Department, Middle East Technical University. Depending on the sensitivity of structure, some devices are built by RF MEMS group in Microelectronic Production Plant for MEMS (METU MET) during the thesis study. Therefore this study is the continuation of the first national work on fabrication of RF MEMS devices.

This thesis reviews the line insulation coordination practices of Turkish Electricity Transmission Company with special focus on E.H.V. transmission line towers’ top geometry and ground clearances. In respect of this, the national regulation, “Elektrik Kuvvetli Akım Tesisleri Yönetmeligi”, is critically evaluated. The national regulation lags behind the modern world practice and the provisions of the regulation lead to uneconomical designs. The possible benefits of the modern practices are shown by applicati...

In this thesis, position and current control systems for a brushless DC (Direct Current) motor are designed and integrated into one FPGA (Field Programmable Gate Array) chip. Experimental results are obtained by driving the brushless DC motors of Control Actuation System of a guided missile. Because of their high performance, brushless DC motors are widely used in Control Actuation Systems of guided missiles. In order to control the motor torque, current controller is designed and implemented in the FPGA. P...

In this thesis, an algorithm will be developed and implemented online for the estimation of rotor position from the rotor slot harmonics in stator currents. Experiments will be done on an inverter driven induction motor hardware, and the performance of the position detection algorithm will be evaluated in comparison with commercial encoder outputs.
Permanent magnet design and image reconstruction algorithm for magnetic resonance imaging in inhomogeneous magnetic fields
Yiğitler, Hüseyin; Eyüboğlu, Behçet Murat; Department of Electrical and Electronics Engineering (2006)
Recently, the use of permanent magnets as magnetic field sources in biomedical applications has become widespread. However, usage of permanent magnets in magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is limited due to their inhomogeneous magnetic field distributions. In this thesis, shape and geometry optimization of a magnet is performed. Moreover, placement of more than one magnet is optimized to obtain desired magnetic field distribution in specific region of space. However, obtained magnetic field distribution can n...
