Optimization of Just-in-Time Adaptive Interventions Using Reinforcement Learning
Gonul, Suat; Namli, Tuncay; Baskaya, Mert; Sinaci, Ali Anil; Coşar, Ahmet; Toroslu, İsmail Hakkı (2018-01-01)
Momentary context data is an important source for intelligent decision making towards personalization of mobile phone notifications. We propose a reinforcement learning based personalized notification delivery algorithm, reasoning over momentary context data. Beyond the state of the art, we propose new approaches for faster convergence of the algorithm and jump start of learning performance at the beginning of the learning process. We test our approach in both simulated and real settings trying to optimize ...
Multiregional social accounting matrix and multiplier analysis: an application for Turkish economy
Erdoğan, Eda; Voyvoda, Ebru; Department of Economics (2011)
Social accounting matrix (SAM) is one of the tools used in regional economic analysis, enabling understanding the structure of the economy as well as analyzing the impacts of policies or exogenous shocks. In this thesis, a two-region SAM of Turkey is constructed for the year 2002 and the findings of multiplier analysis are presented. To this end, first, a two-region input-output (I-O) table is constructed using location quotient (LQ) method and using this two-region I-O table, a two-region SAM is compiled. ...
The twin deficits hypothesis : an empirical investigation
Yanık, Yeliz; Özmen, Erdal; Department of Economics (2006)
This study investigates the validity of the twin deficits hypothesis for the Turkish quarterly data over the 1988:1-2005:2 periods. To this end, we consider a VAR variable space containing budget deficits, current account deficits, real output, real interest rates and real exchange rates and employ cointegration, equilibrium/error correction mechanism techniques along with Granger-non-causality tests and impulse response analyses. The empirical results from decompositions of the budget and current account d...
Institutional approaches to technology and economic history
Dildar, Yasemin; Yıldırım, Onur; Department of Economics (2009)
This thesis is an attempt to reassess the long debated issues of economic history from the perspective of institutional economics. Besides examining different approaches to technology and its impact on economic and social life, it analyzes the role of institutions in history. It discusses the institutional interpretations of the critical developments of economic history such as, the Industrial Revolution and the Great Divergence, with an emphasis on differences between the two scholarly traditions, namely, ...
Real exchange rates and real interest rate differentials : an empirical investigation
Can Mutan, Oya; Özmen, Erdal; Department of Economics (2005)
This study investigates the validity of the real exchange rate-real interest rate differential (RERI) relationship for a sample of twenty-three developing and developed countries. The results based on the Johansen cointegration analysis suggest the validity of the long-run RERI relationship only for a small number of countries including Canada, Italy, Switzerland, Belgium, Chile, Israel and Norway. Real interest rate differentials are found to be positively associated with real exchange rates in the long-ru...
