Capturing what is going on and what may happen related to vehicle handling behaviour in cases of desired or non-desired actions and interventions has a crucial importance. Strategies implemented to improve vehicle stability or algorithms and control modules designed to compensate the non-desired effects on handling behavior may appear to be inadequate as the vehicle goes through uncountable experiences. The importance of understanding and introducing the possible sources of undesired effects which may be encountered throughout driving action cannot be underemphasized. One of the possibilities that may lead the driver face with unexpected results concerning vehicle’s handling is suspension damper failure, which has not yet been dealt with adequately in the literature. The fast developing technology and consequently the expanding utilization of chassis electronics and electronic vehicle components make the investigation of damper failure phenomenon essential since reliability decreases by the continuously increasing introduction of electronic means. In this study, possible failure types of dampers including electrical failure are taken into account, their effects on vehicle stability under critical driving conditions are examined. Shortcomings and comments are made on criticality of failed damper and its failure point. This work as a result, constitutes a particular contribution to the literature in that it brings up a concrete knowledge to the stated research area.

Acoustical analysis of exhaust mufflers for earth-moving machinery
Olğar, Tarık; Çalışkan, Mehmet; Department of Mechanical Engineering (2009)
This study concerns with acoustical analysis of exhaust mufflers for earth-moving machinery. The study arises from the fact that there is a need for further noise reduction emitted by earth-moving machinery produced by Hidromek Inc. in order to be on the safe side of the limits stated in European Noise Directive 2000/14/EC. The acoustical performance of the muffler is investigated both experimental and numerical means. A three-dimensional finite element method is performed to calculate the transmission loss...
Driving Decisions of Young and Old Drivers - Driving Self-Regulation
Azık, Derya; Özkan, Türker (2019-07-05)
The aim of this study is to investigate the relationship between driving self-regulation (i.e., strategical, tactical, and life-goal) and aberrant driver behaviors (i.e., violations, errors, and lapses). 120 old and 138 young, a total of 258 active drivers participated and filled Revised version of Advanced Decisions and Patterns of Travel Scale (Molnar, et al, 2013) and Driver Behavior Questionnaire (DBQ) (Reason et al., 1990; Lajunen, & Özkan, 2004). The results showed that tactical self-regulation was ne...

The main aim of the present study was to investigate the moderating role of aggressive driving of others on the relationship between self-reported aggressive driving behaviors committed by driver himself/herself and drivers’ aberrant and positive driver behaviors (i.e. errors, violations, and positive driver behaviors) among drivers from Estonia, Greece, Kosovo, Russia, and Turkey as the total sample in order to understand the grand pattern. The other aim was to examine the same moderating role of aggressiv...
Role of Positive and Negative Affect on Coping Strategies of Turkish Drivers
Arslan, Burcu; Öz, Bahar (2018-08-30)
Driving is a complex and demanding activity, thus, is mostly accompanied with stress, which is found to influence psychological and physiological health of driver, resulting with increased probability of fatal accidents. Matthews developed first driver stress model, which is a demonstration of interactions between environmental stressors, driver cognitive stress processes, personality traits related with stress vulnerability and stress outcome experiencing by driver. Dispositional affect characteristics are...
Effects of primary task predictability and secondary task modality on lane maintenance
Özbozdağlı, Seda; Mısırlısoy, Mine; Özkan, Türker; Atalay, Nart Bedin (Elsevier BV, 2018-8)
The objective of this work was to investigate the effects of auditory and visuo-spatial secondary tasks on variability in lane position in predictable and unpredictable driving conditions. Sixty-six participants drove a simulated vehicle. Predictability was manipulated by adding wind gusts, and the secondary task load by either an auditory task (Experiment 1) or a visuo-spatial task (Experiment 2). Results demonstrated that in the predictable driving condition, lane position variability decreased when audit...
