Effects of specimen height and loading span on the fracture toughness of disc type rock specimens under three point bending
Tez, Yaşar Burkay; Tutluoğlu, Levent; Department of Mining Engineering (2008)
A relatively new fracture toughness testing method called Straight Notched Disc Bending (SNDB) was used before for fracture testing of Ankara Andesite and Afyon Marble cores. In this work to investigate the applicability of the new method to other rock types. With a preliminary notch of 10 mm, straight notched disc type specimens with a diameter of 75 mm were loaded by three-point bending loads. Investigation of effect of specimen height on the stress intensity factor and fracture toughness was carried out....
Effects of cast-in-place concrete topping on flexural response of precast concrete hollow-core slabs
Baran, Eray (2015-09-01)
Results of a study focusing on the flexural response of precast prestressed concrete hollow-core slabs with cast-in-place concrete topping are presented. The experimental part of the study included load testing of five precast concrete hollow-core units. The numerically determined flexural response of test specimens was later compared with the experimentally obtained behavior. Results demonstrate that a major composite action is valid between the hollow-core unit and the topping slab under load levels corre...
Effects of different bed roughnesses on the characteristics of hydraulic jumps
Velioğlu, Deniz; Tokyay, Nuray; Department of Civil Engineering (2012)
In practice, baffle blocks and sills are commonly being used to stabilize the location of a hydraulic jump and shorten the length of a stilling basin. On the other hand, gravels, corrugations and rectangular prismatic roughnesses which cover the entire length of the basin or placed in a staggered manner may be an alternative. The objective of this study is to determine the effects of these roughness elements on the characteristics of hydraulic jumps such as conjugate depth, jump length and energy dissipatio...
Effects of mix composition and water-cement ratio on the sulfate resistance of blended cements
Sahmaran, M.; Kasap, O.; Duru, K.; Yaman, İsmail Özgür (2007-03-01)
This paper presents an experimental investigation on the sulfate resistance of blended cements containing various amounts of natural pozzolan and/or Class-F fly ash. The performance of blended cements was monitored by exposing the prepared mortar specimens to a 5% Na2SO4 Solution for 78 weeks. For comparison, an ordinary Portland cement (produced with the same clinker as blended cements) and it sulfate resistant Portland cement (produced from a different clinker) were also used. In addition to the cement ch...
