In this study, optical and electrochemical properties of regioregular and soluble alkyl substituted propylenedioxyselenophene based electrochromic polymers, namely poly(3,3-dibutyl-3,4-dihydro-2H-selenopheno[3,4-b][1,4]dioxephine) (PProDOS-C4), poly(3,3-dihexyl-3,4-dihydro-2H-selenopheno[3,4-b][1,4]dioxephine) (PProDOS-C6), and poly(3,3-didecyl-3,4-dihydro-2H-selenopheno[3,4-b][1,4]dioxephine) (PProDOS-C10), which were synthesized via electrochemical polymerization, were investigated. It is noted that these unique polymers have low band gaps (1.54 – 1.64 eV) and they are exceptionally stable under ambient atmospheric conditions. For example, polymer films retained 84-96 % of their electroactivity after five thousands cycles. The percent transmittance of PProDOS-Cn (n= 4, 6, 10) films found to be between 55-59 %. Furthermore, these novel soluble PProDOS-Cn polymers showed electrochromic behavior: a color change form pure blue (L = 57.31, a = -13.18, b = - 42.68) to highly transparent state (L = 91.74, a = 2.52, b = -1.30) state in a low switching time (1.0 s) during oxidation with high coloration efficiencies (328 – 864 cm2/C) when compared to their close analogues.

Syntheses of benzotriazole bearing donor acceptor type random copolymers for full visible light absorption
Öktem, Gözde; Toppare, Levent Kamil; Department of Chemistry (2011)
The synthesis and preliminary optoelectronic properties of a series of donor-acceptor (DA) type polymers differing by the acceptor units in the polymer backbone were investigated. Polymers CoP1, CoP2 and CoP3 were designed to yield alternating DA segments with randomly distributed different acceptor units along polymer backbone. The combination of neutral state red colored and neutral state green colored materials resulted in different neutral state colors with respect to their additional acceptor unit. 5,8...
Synthesis and characterization of multi-hollow opaque polymer pigments
Asmaoğlu, Serdar; Gündüz, Güngör; Maviş, Bora; Department of Chemical Engineering (2012)
In the present work, a new generation opaque polymer pigment with multihollow structure was synthesized by suspension polymerization of “Water-in-Oil-in-Water” (W/O/W) emulsion system. Oil phase was methyl methacrylate and ethylene glycol dimethacrylate monomer mixture at 1:1 weight ratio. The dimension and distribution of hollows inside polymer particles are dependent on the size of water droplets which are encapsulated in micelles. For Water-in-Oil (W/O) assembly, a hydrophobic surfactant and hydrophilic ...

A new thiophene derivative containing menthyl group (MM) was synthesized and polymerized via chemical and electrochemical methods. Polymers obtained and MM itself were used to synthesize copolymers with pyrrole under conditions of constant potential electrolysis. Cyclic Voltammetry, thermal analysis and scanning electron microscopy analyses were performed for the characterization of samples. Immobilization of invertase and polyphenol oxidase enzymes was performed in the matrices obtained via copolymerizatio...
Effect of solvent choice on cellulose acetate membrane fabrication by phase inversion and deacetylation by alkaline hydrolysis
Tekin, Fatma Seden; Çulfaz Emecen, Pınar Zeynep; Department of Chemical Engineering (2022-8)
In this study, the effect of solvent choice on cellulose acetate (CA) membrane morphology and performance was investigated to relate this to the thermodynamics and kinetics of phase inversion. Three different solvent systems were used, which are dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO), the mixture of DMSO: acetone (DA) and DMSO: acetic acid (DHAc) in the ratio of 1:1. Water was used as non-solvent. Acetone and acetic acid were chosen due to their similar solvent quality for cellulose acetate based on Hansen solubility pa...
