The assertion that knowledge of architecture is not an objective canon, but rather the knowledge of its practice, requires an inquiry into its personal dimension, which cannot be articulated completely. The investigations on the inarticulate (tacit) portion of knowledge in Polanyi's works enable an inquiry into the act of comprehension with its cognitive value. This inquiry regards architectural knowledge as personal and acquired through experiences of comprehending meanings in personal problem solving processes like designing. The reorganization of knowledge through articulation is explained to be possible by comprehending the meaning transmitetd through the articulate. Continuity is viewed through the idea that, the comprehended meaning irrevocably enlarges personal knowledge and contributes to the comprehended meaning in the upcoming experiences of the individual. This approach to continuity is the account for regarding architectural education as a self conducted act that lasts as long as the individual continues comprehending. The first year architecture education is regarded as a time limited external support for preparing the students for this continuous self-education. The discussion of the thesis is structured around the depicted polar tension of the first year design studio; between the conformist tendency of the students and the instructors' attitude to enable students' creative experience. The first year of institutional education on architecture is significant for the opportunities it provides for the students' transition form confomism to creativity. The aim is to illustrate how it functions for transition to reintroduce the students' personal dimension into their articulations in the first year design studio practice. This attitude is displayed by exemplifying the setting designs and practices for students' reorganization of knowledge through the creative act of articulation. The thesis adopts in its discussions that the design exercise is a task handled not only for design learning but also for learning how to learn from the design act, which enables the development of creative skills.

The quiddity of knowledge in Kant's critical philosophy
Serin, İsmail; Ceylan, Yasin; Department of Philosophy (2004)
In this thesis the quiddity of knowledge in Kant's critical philosophy has been investigated within the historical context of the problem. In order to illustrate the origins of the subject-matter of the dissertation, the historical background of Kant's views on the theory of knowledge has been researched too. As a result of this research, it is concluded that Kant did not invent a new philosophical problem, but he tried to improve a decisive solution for one of the oldest question of history of philosophy i...
Geometry knowledge test about triangles: evidence on validity and reliability
Ubuz, Behiye (2018-08-01)
In the present study we aimed to develop a multidimensional test assessing high school students' knowledge about triangles, and then to determine the validity evidence for it based on the internal structure and relations to another variable and its reliability. The test developed was administered to 557 tenth grade students. To assess the validity evidence based on the internal structure, the data were analyzed using confirmatory factor analysis, inter-dimension correlations and two-way MANOVA across gender...
Reformulation of the concept of understanding in Heidegger's and Gadamer's hermeneutic theories
Günok, Emrah; Ergüden, Akın; Department of Philosophy (2004)
The goal of the present dissertation is to display the reconstruction of the concept of understanding which has down through the history of philosophy been used as the synonym of knowing. Hence, my main intention is to focus on the Heidegger2s and Gadamer2s critique of epistemological conception of understanding and their reevaluation of this concept in terms of ontology. Finally, I will try to examine the similarities and dissimilarities between the philosophers and try to call attention to their emphasis ...
Perspective for the Reproduction of Architectural Space: ARCH524 as a Pretext
Kapusuz, Bilge Beril; Savaş Sargın, Ayşen; Department of Architecture (2012)
Discovery of the linear perspective of the Renaissance is momentous in terms of the appearance of a new “way of seeing” that is central to the “subject” and emergence of a “subjective” “way of representing” the world. With the assumption that “perspective” is a cultural constituent of the “Renaissance paradigm” that generates the representational notions of art and architecture, perspective is considered as a “convention” and a “mode of representation” that has been influential until the “paradigm shifts” i...
Critique of epistemic externalism and defense of foundationalist internalism
Altuğ, Ali Haydar; Ceylan, Yasin; Department of Philosophy (2015)
This thesis argues that epistemic externalism is untenable and defends that, although facing some severe problems, internalism is the only possible remaining option for a theory of knowledge and justification. It defends a foundationalist version of internalism, in which one’s beliefs about her own state of mind are taken to be certain. In this way, together with propositions of logic and mathematics, foundationalist requirement of certain and basic beliefs is rendered. Further, based on Laurence Bonjour’s ...
