In this study, loss and loading characteristics of compressor tandem blades are evaluated. Whole study was focused on change of the total camber so called turning angle. Effects of camber change were investigated in terms of loss and loading characteristics. Methodology was increasing overall camber first by aligning angular positions of blades and second, if required, using more cambered airfoils. 2-dimensional cascade flow CFD analyses were performed to obtain loss-loading information of different tandem blade combinations. Acquired results were compared with the classical axial compressor blades’ loading and loss characteristics which were obtained from literature. Results showed that most of the time tandem blade configuration performed better than the single blade counterpart in 2-dimensional cascade flow. Lastly, to clarify the benefit of the study and present the gained performance in numbers, only one cascade flow CFD analysis was performed for a classical single compressor blade. Loss and loading results were compared with the tandem blade counterpart where single and tandem configurations both having the same degree of camber. It was clearly seen that tandem blade performed better again.

Free standing layer-by-layer films of polyethyleneimine and poly(l-lysine) for potential use in corneal stroma engineering
Altay, Gizem; Hasırcı, Vasıf Nejat; Khademhosseini, Ali; Department of Biomedical Engineering (2011)
In this study we fabricated free standing multilayer films of polyelectrolyte complexes for potential use in tissue engineering of corneal stroma by using the layer-by-layer (LbL) approach. In the formation of these LbL films negatively charged, photocrosslinkable (methacrylated) hyaluronic acid (MA-HA) was used along with polycations polyethyleneimine (PEI) and poly(L-lysine) (PLL). Type I collagen (Col) was blended in with PLL for improving the water absorption and cell attachment properties of the films....
Determination of relationship between weld quality and mechanical strength in different steels
Soylu, Osman Alper; Doyum, Bülent; Department of Mechanical Engineering (2004)
This study has been conducted to establish a relation between welding quality and strength in various types of steel. This because specification of quality levels higher or lower than required leads to an increase in manufacturing cost. A procedure has been developed to achieve the above objective. In this procedure EN 25817, EN 288-1 and similar welding and nondestructive testing standards have been taken as a basis. Furthermore, effort has been exerted to ensure that welding is performed in a manner that ...
A study on the stress-strain behavior of railroad ballast materials by use of parallel gradation technique
Kaya, Mustafa; Özkan, M. Yener; Department of Civil Engineering (2004)
The shear strength, elastic moduli and plastic strain characteristics of scaled-down ballast materials are investigated by use of the parallel gradation technique. Uniformly graded ballast materials chosen for the investigation are limestone, basalt and steel-slag. Steel-slag is a byproduct material of Eregli Iron and Steel Works, which is suitable to meet the durability test requirements as well as the electrical resistivity and the waste contaminants regulatory level. Conventional triaxial testing at a st...
Evaluation of several multiaxial high cycle fatigue endurance criteria
Engin, Zafer; Çöker, Demirkan; Department of Aerospace Engineering (2018)
Multiaxial high cycle fatigue is an important failure mode for industrial applications as it is experienced by many engineering parts such as rotor blades and crankshafts. Determining the critical locations and especially the fatigue lives of such components have great importance. Therefore, a methodology is needed which would replace expensive and time-consuming test campaigns as it is not possible and feasible to simulate all the loading scenarios that component would experience during the service life. T...
Analysis and design of helicopter rotor blades for reduced vibrational level
Tamer, Aykut; Yaman, Yavuz; Department of Aerospace Engineering (2011)
In this thesis analysis and design of helicopter rotor blades were discussed for reduced vibrational level. For this purpose an optimization procedure was developed which involves coupling of the comprehensive rotorcraft analysis tool CAMRAD JA and the gradient based optimization algorithm. The main goal was to achieve favorable blade structural dynamics characteristics that would lead to reduction in vibrational level. For this purpose blade stiffness and mass distributions were considered as the design va...
