Large displacement and large strain problems of mechanical systems can be solved mainly by four methods. These are Floating Frame of Reference, Incremental Finite Element, Large Rotation Vector and Absolute Nodal Coordinate Formulations (ANCF). Due to exact rigid body representation, simple mass matrix structure and non-incremental formulation, ANCF is more convenient in analyzing flexible multibody systems. However, it is limited to problems with regular boundaries, currently. The aim of the thesis is to improve the current ANCF in order to handle various problems with irregular boundaries. For this purpose, firstly meshfree ANCF has been developed to analyze flexible multibody systems. Verification of the developed meshfree formulation has been performed for beam type structures and accurate results have been obtained. Then, “ANCF with Virtual Element Mapping Method” has been proposed to overcome the boundary problems of the current formulations. The proposed method has been implemented to plane stress, plane strain, plate/shell and 3D solid finite elements. Verification of the proposed method has been performed by using the patch test problems available in the literature. Besides, it has been verified by various flexible multibody problems with large deformations. Additionally, shape function polynomials for thin plate assumption have been derived. It is observed that developed formulations and methods can be useful not only for flexible multibody systems but also for structural mechanics problems subjected to large deformations and/or rotations. The proposed methods and formulations are more efficient than the current formulations in the literature due to extended shape limits of finite elements.

Low-cost seismic base isolation using scrap tire pads (stp)
Özden, Bayezid; Türer, Ahmet; Department of Civil Engineering (2006)
This thesis focuses on the experimental studies conducted on the development of low-cost seismic base isolation pads using scrap automobile tires. Seismic base isolation is a well-defined building protection system against earthquakes, on which numerous studies have been conducted. The majority of the previous studies focus on the performance improvement of the base isolation systems. However, this study aims at cost and weight reduction of seismic base isolation pads by recycling otherwise useless material...
A Mechanistic Model for Predicting Frictional Pressure Losses for Newtonian Fluids in Concentric Annulus
SORGUN, MEHMET; Ozbayoglu, M. E. (Informa UK Limited, 2010-01-01)
A mathematical model is introduced estimating the frictional pressure losses of Newtonian fluids flowing through a concentric annulus. A computer code is developed for the proposed model. Also, extensive experiments with water have been conducted at Middle East Technical University, Petroleum and Natural Gas Engineering Department Flow Loop and recorded pressure drop within the test section for various flow rates. The performance of the proposed model is compared with computational fluid dynamics (CFD) soft...
Dynamic pull analysis for estimating seismic response
Değirmenci, Can; Sucuoğlu, Haluk; Department of Civil Engineering (2006)
The analysis procedures employed in earthquake engineering can be classified as linear static, linear dynamic, nonlinear static and nonlinear dynamic. Linear procedures are usually referred to as force controlled and require less analysis time and less computational effort. On the other hand, nonlinear procedures are referred to as deformation controlled and they are more reliable in characterizing the seismic performance of buildings. However, there is still a great deal of unknowns for nonlinear procedure...
High-order detached eddy simulation of unsteady flow around NREL S826 airfoil
Yalçın, Özgür; Özyörük, Yusuf (Elsevier BV, 2018-08-01)
Delayed detached eddy simulation (DDES) has been a common approach for unsteady turbulent flow problems, but it has several weaknesses which limit its use to detached flows. On the other hand, some enhancements introduced recently have made it possible to apply to attached flows as well. In the present investigation, flow with relatively low Reynolds numbers of 100, 000 and 145, 000 around NREL S826 airfoil is simulated using DDES models with two different length scale definitions: standard length scale and...
Aerodynamic shape optimization of wind turbine blades using a parallel genetic algorithm
Polat, Ozge; Tuncer, İsmail Hakkı (2013-12-31)
An aerodynamic shape optimization methodology based on Genetic Algorithm and Blade Element Momentum theory is developed for rotor blades of horizontal axis wind turbines Optimization studies are performed for the maximization of power production at a specific wind speed, rotor speed and rotor diameter. The potential flow solver with a boundary layer model, XFOIL, provides sectional aerodynamic loads. The sectional chord length, the sectional twist and the blade profiles at root, mid and tip regions of the b...
