Genetic diversity of honey bee (Apis mellifera L.: Hymenoptera: Apidae) populations in Turkey revealed by RAPD markers
TUNCA, RAHŞAN İVGİN; Kence, Meral (2011-12-05)
The honeybee, Apis mellifera L. is an ecologically and economically important insect species. Recent honey bee losses causing decline of bee diversity is found alarming for the pollination of both wild plant biodiversity and crop production. Therefore, determination of genetic diversity of honey bee populations is essential and will provide a valuable resource for conservation purposes. Twenty Random Amplified Polymorphic DNA (RAPD) primers were used to assess the genetic diversity in 720 worker bees collec...
Genetic diversity of honey bee populations in Turkey based on microsatellite markers : a comparison between migratory versus stationary apiaries and isolated regions versus regions open to migratory beekeeping
Kükrer, Mert; Kence, Aykut; Department of Biology (2013)
The honey bee (Apis mellifera L.) is a globally significant species of apparent economic and ecological importance. Recent reports from Spain, Italy and Greece point to an intense admixture of honey bee populations signified by a loss of population structure. This is mostly attributed to migratory beekeeping practices and replacement of queens or colonies with commercial ones that are usually from non-native races or hybrids of different subspecies. These two practices are also heavily carried out in parts ...
HOW WILL CLIMATE CHANGE IMPACT THE PROTECTED AREA NETWORK IN TURKEY?
Erol, Dudu; Bilgin, Cemal Can; Yücel, İsmail; Department of Earth System Science (2021-6-08)
Climate Change is a critical problem which might have irrecoverable effects on nature. Due to rising GHG concentrations in the atmosphere, and consequent global warming, global biodiversity is increasingly under threat. Protected areas are the most important tools to conserve biodiversity from destruction. That is why estimating future climatic conditions in protected areas plays a critical role in the prediction of possible changes in biota and ecosystems. Climate velocity is one such measurement that esti...
Identifying impacts of climate change on water resources using CMIP6 simulations: Havran basin case
Çaktu, Yasemin; Yücel, İsmail; Fıstıkoğlu, Okan; Department of Earth System Science (2022-9-2)
This study aims to investigate climate change effect on precipitation, temperature and discharge in Havran basin which has thousands of decares of agricultural lands. Changes in precipitation and temperature were determined using 10 global climate models (GCMs) for total precipitation and 13 GCMs for average temperature from Coupled Model Intercomparison Project Phase 6 (CMIP6) for the historical period, SSP2-4.5 (moderate-case) and SSP5-8.5 (worst-case) scenarios. Both station observations and ERA5-Land re...
Genetic structure of honeybee, Apis mellifera L. (Hymenoptera : Apidae) populations of Turkey inferred from microsatellite analysis
Bodur, Cagri; Kence, Meral; Kence, Aykut (2007-01-01)
We analyzed the genetic structure of 11 honeybee (Apis mellifera L) populations from Turkey and one from Cyprus using 9 microsatellite marker loci. Heterozygosity levels, mean number of alleles per population, number of diagnostic alleles, and pairwise F-ST values were computed for the populations studied. Heterozygosity levels were found to range between 0.54 and 0.68. We detected high levels of genetic divergence among the populations based on pairwise F-ST values; 50 of 66 pairwise F-ST values were signi...
