Aircraft must be light enough to fly but also strong enough to endure the loads they experience during flight. Designing such a structure is one of the most demanding works in an aircraft design project. In order to design such a structure, accurate evaluation of loads is important. Once the loads applied to the structure are calculated precisely, then the deflections and stresses can be calculated and sizing of the structures can be performed accordingly. Therefore, in aircraft design projects, loads group lies at the heart of the design cycle. It receives inputs from various design groups such as aerodynamics group, structures group, weight and balance group, systems groups, airworthiness group, and so on. Not only receiving these inputs, but load group also provides outputs to various groups, mainly structural design and analysis. Those interactions make aircraft loads one of the most multidisciplinary subjects in aircraft design and analysis. On the other hand, because of those interactions with all disciplines of the design cycle, load analyses are also quite complex, requires systematic work, ability to process massive amounts of data, adequate insight of both aerodynamic and structural issues and communication with not only within the company but also with certification authorities. The objective of this study is provide a comprehensive overview of load analysis process, to develop methods for simplification of aircraft structural and aerodynamic models to make it possible to perform the load analysis in a fast and integrated way during conceptual and preliminary design phases, then to perform a load analysis of an ultralight aircraft as a case study for the demonstration of the load analysis process.

Aeroelastic Modelling and Testing of a Thin Laminated Composite Missile Fin/Wing
Aslan, Göktuğ; Kırımlıoğlu, Serdar; Kurtuluş, Dilek Funda (null; 2017-06-09)
Missile fins or wings exposed to different coupled aerodynamic loads during the mission or flight at subsonic and supersonic velocity profile. Aerodynamic loads varying with the angle of attack and the velocity profile may cause some structural fatigue and failure problems. In order to achieve such problems, high strength materials such as composites are required. In this work, a laminated composite missile fin was investigated in terms of the strength varying with the aerodynamic profile. The fiber orienta...
Aeroservoelastic analysis and robust controller synthesis for flutter suppression of air vehicle control actuation systems
Akmeşe, Alper; Platin, Bülent Emre; Department of Mechanical Engineering (2006)
Flutter is one of the most important phenomena in which aerodynamic surfaces become unstable in certain flight conditions. Since the 1930’s many studies were conducted in the areas of flutter prediction in design stage, research of design methods for flutter prevention, derivation and confirmation of flutter flight envelopes via tests, and in similar subjects for aircraft wings. With the use of controllers in 1960’s, studies on the active flutter suppression began. First the classical controllers were used....
Structural optimization of a composite wing
Sökmen, Özlem; Akgün, Mehmet A.; Department of Aerospace Engineering (2006)
In this study, the structural optimization of a cruise missile wing is accomplished for the aerodynamic loads for four different flight conditions. The flight conditions correspond to the corner points of the V-n diagram. The structural analysis and optimization is performed using the ANSYS finite element program. In order to construct the flight envelope and to find the pressure distribution in each flight condition, FASTRAN Computational Fluid Dynamics program is used. The structural optimization is perfo...
Combined morphing assessment software using flight envelope data and mission based morphing prototype wing development (CHANGE
Yaman, Yavuz(2015-12-31)
"Morphing in aircrafts has been studied and used throughout recent time in order to increase their flight envelope. This characteristic is of the upmost importance in order to offer a greater efficiency, versatility and performance during the assigned mission. Moreover an aircraft with the capability to adapt itself to each given situation is prone to achieve positive results to a range of different missions instead of requiring a specific aircraft to conduct one specific mission. The main objective of thi...

Cold gas propulsion systems are mainly used for attitude controlof satellites. It is possible to obtainvery low pressure and temperature at the exit section of the nozzledue to propulsion system’s nature. Investigation of steady state performance of a cold gas thruster under real gas effects is decided to be carried out. SU2, an open source compressible CFD tool,is used for analyses ofideal gas, Peng-Robinson and van-der Waals gas models. Vacuum chamber test facility of Roketsan is usedfor performance tests....
