The aim of this thesis was to compare the L2 acquisition of two interfaces: syntax-semantics interface (internal interface) and syntax-pragmatics interface (external interface). Disjunctive questions (DQs) were studied for investigating syntax-semantics interface, especially negated DQs (because only high negation DQs cannot have an alternative meaning). The findings related to the syntax-semantics interface revealed that L2ers have the syntactic knowledge of high negation DQs in a native-like manner. However, there was imperfect acquisition of the semantics by L2ers. This suggests that there might be some problems in the acquisition of these phenomena even though they involve an internal interface. It-cleft sentences were examined for investigating syntax-pragmatics interface. The results pertaining the syntax-pragmatics interface showed that the low proficiency L2ers experienced some problems with the syntax of the it-clefts, while the high proficiency L2ers performed in a native-like manner. Surprisingly, both proficiency groups had the pragmatic knowledge that was required for the use of it-clefts in appropriate situations. Even though the low proficiency group lacked the syntactic knowledge of it-clefts, they knew the pragmatic constraints imposed on it-clefts. This indicates that firstly, acquisition of syntax might be problematic at least for low proficiency L2ers. Secondly, the pragmatics of a syntax-discourse interface phenomenon can be acquired fully in a native-like manner without posing any difficulties. Overall, the acquisition of internal interface properties may not be as flawless as it was proposed and also external interface phenomena might be acquired fully without posing special difficulties.

An Analysis of Turkish university level EFL learners’ pronunciation of the diphthongs and triphthongs in English
Albağlar, Necmettin Anıl; Zeyrek Bozşahin, Deniz; Department of English Language Teaching (2015)
The aim of this study is to investigate the development of diphthongs and triphthongs and the influence of orthography on the acquisition of the target sounds. This thesis answers three research questions regarding the pronunciation of /oʊ/, /aʊ/, /oʊǝ/ and /aʊǝ/ by Turkish EFL learners’ at different proficiency levels in English. The first research question aims to compare the pre-intermediate (PIN) and the advanced (ADV) level learners in terms of their pronunciation of the target sounds. The second one f...
Facilitating english as a foreign language learners’ vocabulary learning, task completion and contextual vocabulary exploration processes in a mobile supported situated learning environment
Uz Bilgin, Çiğdem; Tokel, Saniye Tuğba; Yalçın, Şenöm Tuğba; Department of Computer Education and Instructional Technology (2016)
The aim of this study was to investigate how vocabulary learning, task completion, and contextual vocabulary exploration processes of English as a Foreign Language (EFL) learners can be facilitated in a mobile supported situated learning environment. METU Science and Technology Museum which is a large, open space populated with interactive science exhibits was chosen as an authentic learning environment. Mobile system which includes instructions of the experiments and also provides dictionary and visual def...
A type system for combinatory categorial grammar
Erkan, Güneş; Bozşahin, Hüseyin Cem; Department of Computer Engineering (2003)
This thesis investigates the internal structure and the computational representation of the lexical entries in Combinatory Categorial Grammar (CCG). A restricted form of typed feature structures is proposed for representing CCG categories. This proposal is combined with a constraint-based modality system for basic categories of CCG. We present some linguistic evidence to explain why both a uni cation-based feature system and a constraint-based modality system are needed for a lexicalist framework. An implem...
The role of lexical cohesion in L2 reading comprehension
Bayraktar, Hasan; Enginarlar, Hüsnü; Department of Foreign Language Education (2011)
This study aimed at discovering the role of lexical cohesive links in L2 reading comprehension. For this purpose, the researcher carried out lexical cohesion analysis of two TOEFL reading tests consisting of six texts. First, prior to the reading comprehension tests, the students were administered “a vocabulary familiarity task”. Second, the TOEFL reading tests were administered to fifty upper-intermediate and advanced level EFL students at Middle East Technical University, Ankara, Turkey. Third, after each...
Software development for multi-level Petri Net Based Design Inference Nnetwork
Coşkun, Çağdaş; Eren, Abülkadir; Department of Mechanical Engineering (2004)
This thesis presents the computer implementation of a multi resolutional concurrent, design inference network, whose nodes are refined by PNDN (Petri Net Based Design Inference Network) modules. The extended design network is named as N-PNDN and consists of several embedded PNDN modules which models the information flow on a functional basis to facilitate the design automation at the conceptual design phase of an engineering design. Information flow in N-PNDN occurs between parent and child PNDN modules in ...
