The purpose of this study is to investigate the relationship between student- and teacher-level characteristics and 8th grade students’ science achievement (SA) and attitude toward science (ATS) in Turkey, Finland and England through the use of TIMSS 2011 data. Hierarchical Linear Modeling (HLM) was used in the analysis of student-level (gender, HER, parental involvement, time spent on homework and bullying) and teacher-level (confidence, career-satisfaction, collaboration, science-investigations, experience and professional development). The present study was a quantitative research with non-experimental study. Home educational resources (HER) showed significant relationship with SA and ATS in all countries whereas teachers’ professional development and collaborate to improve teaching were statistically non-significant. In addition to HER, gender, parental involvement, and teacher experience were significant in Turkey, Finland and England models explaining ATS. HER explained great variance in SA; moreover, both parental involvement and HER explained great variance in ATS in all three countries. Amount of total explained variance in SA was 16.6 %, 11.7 % and 20.5 % and in ATS it was 6.4 %, 10.9 % and 12.8 % respectively in Turkey, Finland and England. This conceptual model explained more variance in SA than ATS in each country. Highest percentage of variance both in SA and ATS was explained by England. Generally teacher-level variables explained more variance in SA and student-level variables explained more variance in ATS. Recommendations to improve science education in Turkey and future research suggestions were stated based on the findings of this study.

Science teachers’ theory and pedagogy of argumentation in science education: design, implementation, and evaluation of a graduate course through educational design research
Özdem Yılmaz, Yasemin; Çakıroğlu, Jale; Ertepınar, Hamide; Department of Elementary Education (2014)
The current study is an educational design research on the design, implementation and evaluation of a graduate course that is aimed at improving science teachers’ theory and pedagogy of argumentation in science education. It was aimed to describe the educational design process of a graduate course with a reflexive approach. In addition to the design process, the science teachers’ instructional practices in argumentation based lessons were explored in the study. The participants were 1 elementary school scie...
Integrating STEM Education: Perceived barriers and facilitators
Taşcı, Duygu; Öztekin, Ceren (null; 2017-05-21)
The purpose of this research is to uncover obstacles science teachers face regarding integrating STEM in their science course. Data were mainly gathered from 4 experienced science teachers through in depth interviews. They were also requested to draw a picture of their visualization of STEM and they were asked explain their drawings, data were then analyzed by categorizing barriers avoiding STEM integration. Three categories were emerged as teacher-oriented barriers, students-oriented barriers and situation...
A cross-cultural comparison of the effect of human and physical resources on students’ scientific literacy skills in the Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA) 2006
Çelebi, Özgür; Geban, Ömer; Department of Secondary Science and Mathematics Education (2010)
This study investigates the students’ characteristics and school characteristics and their influences on scientific literacy skills of 15-year-old students across Turkey, Canada, and Sweden, through the use of data from Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development’s (OECD’s) Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA) 2006. The purpose of this study is to gain a more complete understanding of the effect of human and physical resource allocations and their interaction on students’ scienti...
Mode-method interaction: the effects of inquıry vs. expository and blended vs. face-to-face instruction on 9th grade students’ achievement in, scıence process skills in and attitudes towards physics
Çetin, Ali; Özdemir, Ömer Faruk; Department of Secondary Science and Mathematics Education (2013)
The purpose of this study is to find out the main effects of instructional modes (blended and face-to-face), teaching methods (inquiry and expository) and the interaction effects between them on 9th grade students’ physics achievements, science process skills, and attitudes towards physics. To achieve this purpose, 2x2 factorial design with four treatment groups were constructed, blended inquiry (W-INQU), blended expository(W-EXPO), face-to-face inquiry (INQU), and face-to-face expository (EXPO). Two web en...
Challenging moments of novice teachers: survival strategies developed through experiences
ÇAKMAK, MELEK; Gündüz, Müge; Emstad, Anne Berit (2019-03-04)
The main objective of this qualitative research study is to demonstrate Norwegian and Turkish novice teachers' reflections on bumpy moments and which strategies they use to cope with the challenges they have faced in practice. The participants of the present study are novice teachers (n = 17) with a maximum of five years' teaching experience. The logbook and interview were the main data collection tools used to reflect novice teachers' challenging moments. The data were recorded and transcribed separately i...
