Holographic c-theorem and Born-Infeld gravity theories
Alkaç, Gökhan; Tekin, Bayram (American Physical Society (APS), 2018-8-15)
The requirement of the existence of a holographic c-function for higher derivative theories is a very restrictive one, and hence most theories do not possess this property. Here, we show that, when some of the parameters are fixed, the D >= 3 Born-Infeld gravity theories admit a holographic c-function. We work out the details of the D = 3 theory with no free parameters, which is a nonminimal Born-Infeld type extension of new massive gravity. Moreover, we show that these theories generate an infinite number ...

Holographically viable extensions of topologically massive and minimal massive gravity?
Altas, Emel; Tekin, Bayram (2016-01-28)
Recently [E. Bergshoeff et al., Classical Quantum Gravity 31, 145008 (2014)], an extension of the topologically massive gravity (TMG) in 2 + 1 dimensions, dubbed as minimal massive gravity (MMG), which is free of the bulk-boundary unitarity clash that inflicts the former theory and all the other known three-dimensional theories, was found. Field equations of MMG differ from those of TMG at quadratic terms in the curvature that do not come from the variation of an action depending on the metric alone. Here w...
Holonic grasping
Durna, M; Erkmen, İsmet; Erkmen, Aydan Müşerref (1998-10-17)
This paper investigates the holonic modeling of multi-fingered robotic hands where 2-stem-of-links+1-joint holons having basic kinematic properties are considered, working in colony in order to perform dexterous grasps, Those holons are the simplest physical elements, which have the capabilities of independent actuation and of cooperation with other holons in achieving global behavior for the whole structure. Our work focuses on the concept of self-reconfigurability of the modular colony structure so as the...
Thermomechanical modeling of NiTi shape memory alloys including plasticity
Küçüker, Hamdi Alpay; Darendeliler, Haluk; Anlaş, Günay; Department of Mechanical Engineering (2022-8)
Shape memory alloys (SMA) are unique materials with an ability to recover their original shape from large deformations when unloaded and/or subjected to heat. Their ability to recover from large strains, due to martensitic transformation, even under excessive loading allows them to be used in various different sectors including aerospace, biomedical and automotive. The present thesis summarizes the studies on constitutive modelling of SMAs and the effect of plasticity on it. Based on the experiments and tes...
