The international science education community recognises the role of pre-service science teachers' views about the interdependence of Science, Technology, and Society (STS) in achieving scientific literacy for all. To this end, pre-service science teachers' STS views signal the strengths and the weaknesses of science education reform movements. Turkey, a country that follows the international reform movement, aims at improving citizen's understanding of the STS interdependence to enable them to fully participate in an industrialised, democratic society. This study explores the Turkish pre-service science teachers' views (n = 176) on STS issues and discusses the ongoing reform efforts' strengths and weaknesses within the context of the study findings. Data were collected through an adopted "Views on Science - Technology - Society" instrument. Analysis revealed that many participants held realistic views on science, technology, and society interdependence, while their views on technology and the nature of science were differed. Some viewed technology as an application of science, and some viewed science as explanatory and an interpretation of nature. Most agreed that the scientific knowledge is tentative but they did not present a thorough understanding of the differences between hypotheses, laws, and theories.

Şen, Mehmet; Sungur, Semra; Öztekin, Ceren (null; 2018-07-01)
Even though scientific literacy is main goal of science education; there is no valid, reliable and comprehensive scale to assess students’ scientific literacy. Therefore, this study aims to adapt Global Scientific Literacy Questionnaire (Mun et al., 2015) in Turkish context to fill the gap regarding assessment of students’ scientific literacy level. It is a 48 item 5 point Likert type scale having four dimensions which are habits of mind, character and values, science as human endeavour and metacognition Pi...
Improving Middle School Students’ Scientific Literacy through Science Writing Heuristic (SWH) Approach
Şen, Mehmet; Sungur, Semra; Öztekin, Ceren (2018-07-01)
One of the major aims of the science education in middle school level is to raise scientifically literate people. In this study, impact of science writing heuristic approach (SWH) which has its roots in argumentation based instruction on students’ scientific literacy level is intended to be examined. A total of 80 six grade students participate in the study. Data will be collected by administering the Global Scientific Literacy Questionnaire (GSLQ) as pre-test and post-test. The GSLQ consists of four dimens...

Integrating STEM Education: Perceived barriers and facilitators
Taşcı, Duygu; Öztekin, Ceren (null; 2017-05-21)
The purpose of this research is to uncover obstacles science teachers face regarding integrating STEM in their science course. Data were mainly gathered from 4 experienced science teachers through in depth interviews. They were also requested to draw a picture of their visualization of STEM and they were asked explain their drawings, data were then analyzed by categorizing barriers avoiding STEM integration. Three categories were emerged as teacher-oriented barriers, students-oriented barriers and situation...
