Fire tests of cut and cover tunnel roof segments at positive moment region
Arsava, Kemal Sarp; Arsava, Kemal Sarp; Department of Civil Engineering (2011)
The most important issue during a tunnel fire is safety of human life. The tunnel fire structural research and investigations have gained more importance in the last decade but studies show variable results depending on the concrete quality and tunnel design fire. For instance, a certain type of concrete with high moisture content can tend to explode in the first 10-15 minutes of fire with rapid increase of heat release rate. A sudden collapse of the tunnel roof during the fire is unacceptable. Especially i...
Fire Retardant Properties of Intumescent Polypropylene Composites Filled With Calcium Carbonate
Isitman, Nihat Ali; Dogan, Mehmet; Bayramli, ERDAL; Kaynak, Cevdet (Wiley, 2011-05-01)
This study was aimed to investigate the influence of calcium carbonate (CaCO(3)), a widely used filler, on the fire retardancy of intumescent polypropylene composites. Two intumescent systems based on (1) mixture of ammonium polyphosphate (APP) and pentaerythritol and (2) surface-modified APP (m-APP) were examined. In terms of steady heat release rate, total heat evolved, and fire growth index determined by mass loss calorimetry, m-APP performed markedly superior to APP-pentaerythritol. The presence of CaCO...
Fire vulnerability assessment of architectural design parameters with fuzzy logic model
Kızılkaya, Nilüfer; Tanyer, Ali Murat; Pekeriçli, Mehmet Koray; Department of Building Science in Architecture (2016)
There is a direct relationship between building characteristics and fire spread. Acceptability of fire safety design involves interoperability of fire safety objectives and building design input. In case of unacceptable fire safety design process, modifications are made in proposed building design parameters for which architects are decision makers. Therefore, in order to get an acceptable level of fire safety, vulnerability of building design parameters must be identified during the design process by archi...
