Wide-area spaceborne maritime surveillance system

2017-06-22
Wide Area Aerial Surveillance (WAAS) systems are gaining popularity nowadays. The main function of WAAS systems is to obtain high resolution images of a large area and create knowledge to facilitate situational awareness. To accomplish that, these systems circling over city-size regions, typically at an altitude of 10.000 feet or higher, obtain images at GSDs of 20-50 cm at around 1-2 fps. Instead of transferring huge amount of raw data, it is processed onboard and extracted data is transferred. In this paper, the possibility of applying the same approach to space for the purpose of maritime surveillance is investigated. The ultimate purpose of Wide-Area Spaceborne Maritime Surveillance System (WASMAS) is to create a near real time map of ship movements all over the world. Following a requirement analysis and basic properties of the optical payload, concept of operations are introduced. An orbital analysis of the constellation is given and possibility of on-board real-time image analysis is discussed. Preliminary results are promising and shows that the system can be realized in large cubesat platforms. However, further research is required.

AUTOMATIC ROAD DETECTION FROM GRAY LEVEL IMAGES IN WIDE AREA SURVEILLANCE
OĞUL, Can; Gürbüz, Yeti Ziya; Alatan, Abdullah Aydın (2016-07-17)
Wide Area Surveillance (WAS) systems are capable of providing continuous surveillance of critical areas as wide as city center (approximately 20 km square), mostly as a gray-level video. Utilization of road information for WAS systems increases moving vehicle tracking performance, while reducing the false alarm rates that might occur due to tall buildings, shadows or terrain. Two different novel approaches for automatic road detection from gray values images are presented in this paper. In the first approac...
Safe software system development framework for mini unmanned aerial systems
Altan, Önder; Alemdaroğlu, Hüseyin Nafiz; Department of Aerospace Engineering (2014)
Due to the rapid growth of the utilization of Mini Unmanned Aerial Systems (MUAS) in populated areas, system safety concerns regarding these systems are becoming more important more than ever. Reliability and robustness of the software systems (SS), which are embedded within MUASs to handle their autonomy, should be assured by applying safe development methodologies. This thesis introduces a unique and comprehensive software framework for design, implementation and testing of MUAS software systems, which en...
Satellite Failure Estimation vs. Reliability Prediction Analysis
Gures, Seda Demirbas; Ulusoy, İlkay; Durmaz, Burak (2019-01-01)
The satellite technology has been attracting the attention of governments and companies with increasing areas of application. For any of these application areas, reliable and rugged design of satellite is essential. In case there is a failure on satellite, according to its severity, it may lead to the loss of the mission or even the satellite. Therefore, assessing possible satellite failures that might occur during its operational life and taking precautions in the design phase is very critical for satellit...
An Adaptive, energy-aware and distributed fault-tolerant topology-control algorithm for heterogeneous wireless sensor networks
Deniz, Fatih; Yazıcı, Adnan; Bağcı, Hakkı; Department of Computer Engineering (2016)
Wireless sensor networks (WSNs) are being used in numerous fields, such as battlefield surveillance, environmental monitoring and traffic control. They are typically composed of large numbers of tiny sensor nodes with limited resources. Because of their limitations and because of the environments they are being used, there are problems unique to WSNs. Due to the error-prone nature of wireless communication, especially in harsh environments, fault-tolerance emerges as an important property in WSNs. Also, bec...
Collaborative mobile target imaging in ultra-wideband wireless radar sensor networks
Arık, Muharrem; Akan, Özgür Barış; Department of Electrical and Electronics Engineering (2008)
Wireless sensor networks (WSN) have thus far been used for detection and tracking of static and mobile targets for surveillance and security applications. However, detection and tracking do not suffice for a complete satisfaction of these applications and an accurate target classification. To address this need, among various target classification methods, imaging of target yields the most valuable information. Nevertheless, imaging of mobile targets moving over an area requires networked and collaborative d...
