In order to achieve local administration of drugs, calcein (CAL) encapsulated reverse phase evaporation vesicles (REV) carrying photoactive destabilization agent suprofen (SPF) in the lipid bilayer were prepared. Effect of both UV-A and UV-B photoactivation of liposomal membrane incorporated SPF on the destabilization of the liposome bilayer and the release of encapsulated CAL was investigated. Standard REV of phosphatidylcholine (PC):cholesterol (CHOL) in 7:3 molar ratio, and photoactive REV of PC:CHOL:SPF, and DPPC:CHOL:SPF in 7:33 molar ratio were prepared. CAL encapsulation efficiency (EE (%)) and in situ release was studied. SPF incorporation in the PC REV membrane led to approximately 5% increase in the EE (34%) in comparison to standard REV (29%). EE decreased (21%) when DPPC was used to replace PC. Exposure to UV-B caused the highest CAL release. The lowest release was from the unexposed REV DPPC led to a higher liposomal membrane stability (lower CAL release) than PC. A linear relationship was observed between UV-B exposure duration and REV permeability. This study revealed that membrane destabilization of SPF incorporated REV was best achieved upon photoactivation of the membrane-localized SPF by a 40 min exposure to UV-B. Kinetic analyses of the effects of temperature and light intensity on growth, hydrogenm production and organic acid utilization by rhodobacter capsulatus
Sevinç, Pelin; Gündüz, Ufuk; Department of Biotechnology (2010)
Effects of temperature and light intensity on photofermentative hydrogen production by Rhodobacter capsulatus DSM1710 by use of acetic and lactic acids as substrates were studied. Experiments were conducted at 20, 30 and 38oC incubator temperatures under light intensities in the 1500 – 7000 lux range. pH of the medium and quantity of hydrogen forming together with quantity of biomass, and concentrations of acetic, lactic, formic, butyric and propionic acids in the medium were determined periodically. Growth...
Optical fluoride sensing with a bay region functionalized perylenediimide dye
Yukruk, Funda (2006-01-01)
A perylenedimiide (PDI) derivative functionalized at the perylene core (bay region) to carry phenyl boronic acid groups was shown to interact with fluoride with changes in the emission and absorption spectrum. These changes are most likely due to fluoride-induced aggregation and/or quenching of the perylenediimide dye. The dye is also selective; among halide ions, fluoride anions generate a significant response. Thus, this class of PDI derivatives is likely to be useful in practical fluoride sensing.
Radiation Treatment of Wastewater for Reuse with Particular Focus on Wastewaters Containing Organic Pollutants
Ergun, E; Kantoğlu, Ömer; İnce, Mahir; Bayramoğlu, Tuba Hande; Dilek, Filiz Bengü (International Atomic Energy Agency, 2018-01-01)
In this period of the research, aerobic and anaerobic digestion, characterization of alkaloids present and radiolysis products formed after irradiation, under different conditions of ambient and additives, optimization of dose to achieve desired end characteristics for discharge of waste water were aimed. In this regard, unirradiated and irradiated wastewaters were subjected to aerobic and anaerobic digestions. Substrate removal efficiencies of unirradiated and i...
Influence of oxygen transfer on benzaldehyde lyase production by recombinant Escherichia coli BL21(DE3) pLySs
Angardi, Vahideh; Çalık, Pınar; Department of Chemical Engineering (2007)
In this study, the effects of oxygen transfer conditions on the synthesis of the enzyme benzaldehyde lyase as intracellular in recombinant E. coli BL21 (DE3) pLysS was investigated sistematically and a comprehensive model was developed to determine benzaldehyde lyase activity. For this purpose, the research program was carried out in mainly two parts. In the first part of study, the effects of oxygen transfer together with the mass transfer coefficient (KLa), enhancement factor E (=KLa/KLao), volumetric oxy...
Infrared fluorescence sensing of submicromolar calcium: pushing the limits of photoinduced electron transfer
Ozmen, B; Akkaya, EU (Elsevier BV, 2000-11-18)
A heptamethine cyanine-BAPTA conjugate was synthesized which signals calcium binding by an almost 4-fold increase in the emission intensity at the emission maximum of 782 nm. This significant enhancement factor opens new possibilities for the development of IR fluorescent chemosensors excitable with an inexpensive 780 nm laser diode and detectable with highly sensitive avalanche diodes.
