The potential of ETS-10 as a Lewis acid catalyst was investigated using the MPV reaction at one atmosphere total pressure and 273 K. ETS-10 was hypothesized to be a potential Lewis acid catalyst as it has titanium in octahedral symmetry, which is the symmetry shown in zeolite Beta to be the most active site for the Lewis acid catalyzed Meerwein-Ponndorf-Verley (MPV) reaction. The MPV reaction is a hydrogen transfer reaction that can be used for obtaining information about the structure and performance of catalysts by comparing the product selectivities and catalytic activities. Due to their similar structures, the catalytic activity of ETS-10 was compared to zeolite Beta samples that were space-grown (flight, fewer defects) and to their earth-grown terrestrial controls. The higher tr-alcohol selectivity (i.e., trans-4-tert-butylcyclohexanol, similar to 80% vs. 40%) observed over ETS-10 was attributed to a larger volume being available in the pores of ETS-10 compared to the zeolite Beta samples. By-product formation (i.e., 4-tert-butylcyclohexene) was significantly less over ETS-10 (similar to 5%) in comparison with the zeolite Beta samples (flight and control; similar to 35%). These results reaffirm the octahedral symmetry as the Lewis active site for the MPV reaction, and illustrate that ETS-10 is a good catalyst for MPV type reactions.

Deuterium kinetic isotope effects in the gas-phase S N2 reactions of solvated fluoride ions with methyl halides
Kato, Shuji; Hacaloğlu, Jale; Davico, Gustavo E.; DePuy, Charles H.; Bierbaum, Veronica M. (2004-11-11)
Rate constants and deuterium kinetic isotope effects (KIEs) are measured for gas-phase nucleophilic substitution (S(N)2) reactions of solvated fluoride ions of F-(methanol) + CH3X (X = Br, I), F-(isopropyl alcohol) + CH3I, and F-(hydrogen fluoride) + CH3I at 300 K. The isotope effects are determined as the rate constant ratio k(H)/k(D) for specifically deuterated reactants, that is, methanol (CH3OH, CD3OH, CH3OD, and CD3OD), isopropyl alcohol (i-C3H7OH and i-C3H7OD), hydrogen fluoride (HF and DF), and methy...
Lewis acid catalyzed 1,3-dipolar cycloadditon reactions of stabilized azomethine ylides
Doğan, Özdemir; KANIŞKAN, Ümit (2001-01-01)
Diethylzinc was tested for the first time as the Lewis acid in 1,3-dipolar cycloaddition reactions of azomethine ylides to synthesize pyrrolidine derivatives. A new, easily applicable and highly selective method was developed for the synthesis of highly substituted pyrrolidines. By the application of this method, the synthesis of three new pyrrolidine derivatives was achieved.
Atom transfer rearrangement radical polymerization of (2,4,6-trihalophenolato) Fe(II)/Ce(III)/Ce(IV) complexes in solid state
Celik, Gueler Bayrakli; Sultan, Wadie; Kisakuerek, Duygu (Walter de Gruyter GmbH, 2006-11-21)
The synthesis of poly(dihalophenylene oxide)s by thermal decomposition of Fe(II), Ce(III) and Ce(IV) phenolato complexes with pyridine as neutral ligands were achieved at different temperature ranges (140 degrees - 250 degrees C) with different time intervals (3 - 48 hr) via atom transfer rearrangement radical polymerization (ATRRP). The complexes were characterized by FTIR, DSC, UV-Visible, mass spectroscopy, magnetic susceptibility and elemental analyses. Structural analyses of polymers were performed by ...
Palladium(0) nanoclusters stabilized by poly(4-styrenesulfonic acid-co-maleic acid) as an effective catalyst for Suzuki-Miyaura cross-coupling reactions in water
Metin, Onder; DURAP, FEYYAZ; AYDEMİR, MURAT; Özkar, Saim (Elsevier BV, 2011-03-01)
Palladium(0) nanoclusters stabilized by poly(4-styrenesulfonic acid-co-maleic acid), PSSA-co-MA, were generated in situ during the hydrolysis of ammonia-borane (AB) from the reduction of potassium tetrachloropalladate(II) in aqueous solution at room temperature. They were isolated from the reaction solution and characterized by UV-visible electronic absorption spectroscopy, TEM, SAED and XRD techniques. The PSSA-co-MA stabilized palladium(0) nanoclusters were used as catalyst in Suzuki-Miyaura cross-couplin...
Poly(n-vinyl-2-pyrrolidone) stabilized nickel(0) nanoparticles as catalyst for hydrogen generation from the methanolysis of ammonia borane
Kılıçaslan, Nihan Zülay; Özkar, Salim; Department of Chemistry (2015)
This dissertion includes the preparation and characterization of poly(N-vinyl-2-pyrrolidone) stabilized nickel(0) nanoparticles, and investigation of their catalytic activity in hydrogen generation from catalytic methanolysis of ammonia-borane (AB). PVP-stabilized nickel(0) nanoparticles were prepared from the reduction of nickel(II) ethylhexanoate in the presence of PVP as stabilizer, by hydrazine borane at room temperature. PVP-stabilized nickel(0) nanoparticles were isolated from reaction medium by centr...
