Poly(3-hydroxybutyrate) (P3HB), its co-polymers with 3-hydroxyvalerate (HV) (PHBV8 and PHBV22), and their hydroxyapatite (HAp) containing composites (5 and 15%, w/w) were prepared by injection molding. PHBV bone plates with low valerate contents and 15% (w/w) HAp appear to have better mechanical properties than the others. Flexural strengths of 15% (w/w) HAp-loaded P3HB, PHBV8 and PHBV22 were 78.28, 63.45 and 39.38 MPa, respectively. Tensile strengths of 15% (w/w) HAp-loaded P3HB, PHBV8 and PHBV22 were 18.99, 15.44 and 11.02 Wa, respectively. For the ageing test, bone plates were incubated in phosphate-buffered saline PBS (0.1 M, pH 7.4) at 37 degrees C and at pre-determined time points they were removed and subjected to a three-point bending test. Incubation in PBS caused a sharp decrease in the mechanical properties within the first 24 h, followed either by a gradual decrease or no change for a period of about 1 month. SEM results showed that there was no significant material erosion in the 4-week incubation period. P3HB loaded with 15% HAp appeared to yield the most suitable bone plate, insofar as mechanical properties are concerned with potential for further testing in vivo.

Hydroxyapatite and zirconia composites: Effect of MgO and MgF2 on the stability of phases and sinterability
Evis, Zafer; KUTBAY, IŞIL (2008-07-15)
Composites of hydroxyapatite with cubic zirconia with MgO or MgF2 were pressureless sintered at temperatures from 1000 to 1300 degrees C. The reactions and transformations of phases were monitored with X-ray diffraction. For the hydroxyapatite and zirconia composites with MgO, calcium diffused from hydroxyapatite into the zirconia, and hydroxyapatite decomposed to tri-calcium phosphate at sintering temperatures higher than 1000 degrees C. Above about 1200 degrees C, CaZrO3 was formed. Composites containing ...
Hydroxyapatite nanorod-reinforced biodegradable poly(L-lactic acid) composites for bone plate applications
Aydin, Erkin; Planell, Josep A.; Hasırcı, Vasıf Nejat (2011-11-01)
Novel PLLA composite fibers containing hydroxyapatite (HAp) nanorods with or without surface lactic acid grafting were produced by extrusion for use as reinforcements in PLLA-based bone plates. Fibers containing 0-50% (w/w) HAp nanorods, aligned parallel to fiber axis, were extruded. Lactic acid surface grafting of HAp nanorods (lacHAp) improved the tensile properties of composites fibers better than the non-grafted ones (nHAp). Best tensile modulus values of 2.59, 2.49, and 4.12 GPa were obtained for loadi...
Trace metal levels in fish and crustacea from Northeastern Mediterranean coastal waters
Balkas, Turgut I; Tuğrul, Süleyman; Salihoǧlu, Ǐlkay (Elsevier BV, 1982-06-01)
Some fish and crustacea caught near the northeastern Mediterranean coast of Turkey between 1977 and 1980 have been analysed by the AAS technique for their H Hg, Cd, Pb, Zn, Cu, Fe, Ni, Cr and Mn contents. In the crustacea Portunus pelagicus (crab) and Penaeus keratherus (shrimp), the two essential elements Zn and Cu, showed a linear correlation. Among the bony fish, Upeneus moluccensis (gold band goat fish), a member of the Mullidae family, and Portunus pelagicus showed a much greater tendency to accumulate...
Zircon U Pb Geochronology Hf Isotopes and whole rock geochemistry of the meta magmatic rocks from the Çangaldağ Complex Central Pontides Turkey
Çimen, Okay; Göncüoğlu, Mehmet Cemal; Simonetti, Antonio; Sayıt, Kaan (2016-04-11)
The Central Pontides in northern Turkey form an imbricated structural complex that consists of a number of variably metamorphic oceanic assemblages between the Istanbul-Zonguldak and Sakarya Composite terranes. The Çangaldağ Complex is a member of this unit and occurs as an E-W trending 30 km long and 15 km wide belt to the north of the Kastamonu-Boyabat Tertiary basin. The Çangaldağ Complex consists predominantly of variably deformed and metamorphosed igneous rocks ranging from felsic to mafic in compositi...
Pt-incorporated anatase TiO2(001) surface for solar cell applications: First-principles density functional theory calculations
METE, ERSEN; Üner, Deniz; GÜLSEREN, Oğuz; ELLİALTIOĞLU, SÜLEYMAN ŞİNASİ (2009-03-01)
First-principles density functional theory calculations were carried out to determine the low energy geometries of anatase TiO2(001) with Pt implants in the sublayers as substitutional and interstitial impurities as well as on the surface in the form of adsorbates. We investigated the effect of such a systematic Pt incorporation in the electronic structure of this surface for isolated and interacting impurities with an emphasis on the reduction in the band gap to visible region. Comprehensive calculations, ...
