SOUTHERN MENDERES MASSIF - AN INCIPIENT METAMORPHIC CORE COMPLEX IN WESTERN ANATOLIA, TURKEY
Bozkurt, Erdin (Geological Society of London, 1994-03-01)
In the southern sector of the Menderes Massif, north of Selimiye (Milas) augen gneisses interpreted as a deformed peraluminous granite have been dynamothermally metamorphosed and are surrounded by and intrude a regionally metamorphosed Palaeozoic 'envelope'. The granitic rocks exhibit a moderately-dipping mylonitic foliation and NNE-SSW- trending mineral elongation lineation. The progressive deformation of the granitic rocks produces a structural sequence typical of an extensional shear zone marked, from bo...
Ar-39/Ar-40 ages from the Yozgat batholith: Preliminary data on the timing of Late Cretaceous extension in the central Anatolian crystalline complex, Turkey
IŞIK, VEYSEL; Lo, Ching-Hua; Göncüoğlu, Mehmet Cemal; Demirel, Serhat (University of Chicago Press, 2008-09-01)
Isotopic dating of sheared and unsheared rocks can be important in understanding deformational processes in orogenic belts. This study examines Ar-40/Ar-39 dating of granitoids and mylonitic rocks to constrain intrusive and deformational events within the northern part of the central Anatolian crystalline complex (CACC). The Kerkenez granitoid within this complex, comprising primarily quartz monzonite and hornblende granite, contains discrete ductile shear zones. These zones are characterized by protomyloni...
Vertical-axis rotations accommodated along the Mid-Cycladic lineament on Paros Island in the extensional heart of the Aegean orocline (Greece)
Malandri, Christina; Soukis, Konstantinos; Maffione, Marco; Ozkaptan, Murat; Vassilakis, Emmanuel; Lozios, Stelios; van Hinsbergen, Douwe J. J. (GeoScienceWorld, 2017-02-01)
The Aegean-west Anatolian orocline formed due to Neogene opposite rotations of its western and eastern limbs during opening of the Aegean back-arc basin. Stretching lineations in exhumed metamorphic complexes in this basin mimic the regional vertical-axis rotation patterns and suggest that the oppositely rotating domains are sharply bounded along a Mid-Cycladic lineament, the tectonic nature of which is enigmatic. Some have proposed this lineament to be an extensional fault accommodating orogen-parallel ext...
The southern Menderes Massif (western Turkey): geochronology and exhumation history
Bozkurt, Erdin (Wiley, 2000-07-01)
In the southern flank of the Menderes Massif, western Turkey, an E-W-trending quartz-mica vein was recognized in the augen gneisses of the so-called 'core' series. Rb-Sr determinations of two undeformed or slightly deformed mica books from the vein yielded Palaeocene-Early Eocene ages (c. 62-43 Ma) for the vein formation. The new data are interpreted to closely post-date the time of major Barrovian-type High Temperature/Medium pressure (HT/MP) main Menderes metamorphism (MMM) and coeval crustal-scale top-to...
Preparation of clay-polymer nanocomposite for the retardation of waste water infiltration in landfill sites
Bildiren, Mert; Günal Türkmenoğlu, Asuman; Department of Geological Engineering (2007)
In this thesis study, the use of clay-polymer nanocomposites for their applicability in landfill sites as a product of retardation of waste water infiltration was evaluated. For this purpose, organophilic clays from HDTMA+ organic cation and nanocomposites of montmorillonite were prepared. The bentonite samples B1, B2 and B3 dominantly contain 2:1 layer montmorillonite and 1:1 interstratification of illite/smectite mixed layer as clay minerals. B1 is an unmodified yellow bentonite and B2 is a grey bentonite...
