Free standing layer-by-layer films of polyethyleneimine and poly(l-lysine) for potential use in corneal stroma engineering
Altay, Gizem; Hasırcı, Vasıf Nejat; Khademhosseini, Ali; Department of Biomedical Engineering (2011)
In this study we fabricated free standing multilayer films of polyelectrolyte complexes for potential use in tissue engineering of corneal stroma by using the layer-by-layer (LbL) approach. In the formation of these LbL films negatively charged, photocrosslinkable (methacrylated) hyaluronic acid (MA-HA) was used along with polycations polyethyleneimine (PEI) and poly(L-lysine) (PLL). Type I collagen (Col) was blended in with PLL for improving the water absorption and cell attachment properties of the films....
Development and characterization of silk fibroin and citrus pectin based scaffolds for bone tissue engineering
Ataol, Sibel; Tezcaner, Ayşen; Akdağ, Akın; Department of Biomedical Engineering (2014)
Current strategies of tissue engineering aim to design and develop biologically, physicochemically and mechanically proper scaffolds. Natural polymers are gaining interest in applications since they have already many roles in biochemical pathways and have proper mechanical properties. The objective of this thesis is to develop natural silk fibroin (SF) and citrus pectin (PEC) based three-dimensional porous scaffolds for bone tissue engineering applications. Additionally, we aimed to synthesize nano calcium ...
Rational choice theory: its merits and limits in explaining and predicting cultural behavior
Kılınç Adanalı, Yurdagül; Turan, Şeref Halil; Department of Philosophy (2016)
The main goal of this dissertation is to examine whether instrumental rationality can predict and explain successfully human behavior in all walks of life. I have chosen Rational Choice Theory and Public Choice Theory as the focus of my investigation, since they are considered as the best models of instrumental rationality in philosophy and social sciences, and in particular in economics and politics. To see their merits and to determine their limits, I have applied Rational Choice Theory and Public Choice ...
Inter and intra annual variation in body condition of the Black Sea anchovy, Engraulis encrasicolus ponticus-Potential causes and consequences
Gücü, Ali Cemal; Bascinar, Nimet Selda; Dagtekin, Murat; Atilgan, Elvan; Erbay, Murat; Akpinar, Ilkay Ozcan; Kutlu, Sebahattin (2018-09-01)
Variations in the relative condition (Kn) of the Black Sea anchovy (Engraulis encrasicolus ponticus) have been evaluated over eleven overwintering seasons (2005-2016). During the study period, a linear decrease was observed in the condition each year. Difference in condition from the onset to end of winter varied between 10% and 20%. Overall however, condition displayed an increasing trend within the time frame studied. Considering the worsening state of the stock during the same period, this increasing tre...
Engineering advanced polymeric surfaces for smart systems in biomedicine, biology, material science and nanotecnology: A cross-disciplinary approach of Biology, Chemistry and Physics (BIOPOLYSURF)
Hasırcı, Vasıf Nejat(2008-9-30)
The enormous potential of Biology in combination with Chemistry and Physics will lead to break-through advances in material science and to an abundant wealth of exploitable developments, Chemistry and Physics offer advanced tools for synthesis, characterization, theoretical understanding and manufacture of materials and devices, while Biology offer a window into the most sophisticated collection of functional nanostructures that exist. The inspiration searched in Nature will expand not only lo the use of th...
