A study was carried out into the processing of Mg-10 vol.% Ti powder mixture for hydrogen storage purposes. Two processing routes were evaluated; mechanical milling and plasma synthesis. Mechanical milling, carried out with a high speed planetary mill, yielded a particulate structure made up of large Mg agglomerates, 90-100 mu m, with embedded Ti fragments of approx. 1 mu m in size with a uniform distribution. Mg agglomerates were made up of coherently diffracting volumes that were less than SO nm in size. Plasma processing was carried out with an RF plasma torch of 25-27 kW applied power, the powder mixtures fed with 1-3 g/min axially into the torch. The mixture Mg-10 vol.% Ti after plasma processing comprised Mg powders which were extremely fine, <100 nm. Ti occurred as separate particles mixed with Mg nanopowders. The powders had a coherently diffracting volumes that were comparable to the size of the particles themselves indicating that the plasma processing yields relatively defect free crystals. The formation of the nano-size particulate structures is evaluated with regard to their possible implications on the hydrogenation of Mg-Ti alloys. (C) 2010 Professor T. Nejat Veziroglu. The processing of mg-ti powder for hydrogen storage
Çakmak, Gülhan; Öztürk, Tayfur; Department of Metallurgical and Materials Engineering (2011)
A study was carried out on the selection of processing condition that would yield Mg-Ti with most favourable hydrogenation properties. Processing routes under consideration were; mechanical milling under inert atmosphere, reactive milling i.e. milling under hydrogen atmosphere, ECAP (equal channel angular pressing) and thermal plasma synthesis. Structure resulting from each of these processing routes was characterized with respect to size reduction, coherently diffracting volume and the distribution of Ti c...
A new method for synthesis of aziridine 2-phosphonates and their biological activities
Babiz, Hakan; Doğan, Özdemir; Department of Chemistry (2010)
A systematic study was carried out for the synthesis of aziridine 2-phosphonates by using two methods. First method is the classical Gabriel-Cromwell reaction and the second one is the modified version of Gabriel-Cromwell reaction which was developed in this thesis. In the first method, vinyl phosphonate was used as the starting material, then it was brominated to get 1,2-dibromoethyl phosphonate. HBr elimination from this compound, then reaction with different primary amines gave desired aziridinyl phospho...
Development of test structures and methods for characterization of MEMS materials
Yıldırım, Ender; Arıkan, Mehmet Ali Sahir; Department of Mechanical Engineering (2005)
This study concerns with the testing methods for mechanical characterization at micron scale. The need for the study arises from the fact that the mechanical properties of materials at micron scale differ compared to their bulk counterparts, depending on the microfabrication method involved. Various test structures are designed according to the criteria specified in this thesis, and tested for this purpose in micron scale. Static and fatigue properties of the materials are aimed to be extracted through the ...
The Photocatalytic activity of praseodymium doped titanium dioxide
Doğu, Doruk; Karakaş, Gürkan; Ögel, Bilgehan; Department of Micro and Nanotechnology (2012)
In this study nanocrystalline TiO2 was synthesized by a sol-gel process. The effect of praseodymium (Pr) doping and calcination conditions on the textural properties of nano structured particles and photocatalytic activity were examined. Samples were synthesized by hydrolyzation of titanium tetra iso-propoxide (TTIP) and calcination at different temperatures. Characterizations of the samples were carried out using XRD, BET, XPS, TEM, and EDAX analyses. It was observed that anatase to rutile transformation i...
Design of a new equipment for sesame seed dehulling
Güngör, Uğraş; Esin, Ali; Department of Food Engineering (2004)
In this study, new methods and processing equipments for sesame dehulling were investigated. First, water absorption of sesame seed was studied at 20, 30, and 40°C. The data could be modeled using Peleg equation where it was found that the constant k1 was inversely related to temperature but the effect of temperature on k2 was negligible. In the second phase of the work a lab scale continuous screw conveyor as dehuller and two equipments, (1) fluidized bed dryer and (2) hull separator to function as agitato...
