Since the 1980s, the urban restructuration. process has had important effects on cities. One of these is the transformation of urban residential space, which includes processes such as urban renewal and gentrification. The aim of this paper is to briefly examine three urban residential transformation processes in Turkey. Two of these are examples of gentrification of two different neighbourhoods in Istanbul, and the third is an example of urban renewal in a neighbourhood in Ankara. The transformation processes in each of these examples have different structures. Related to the characteristics of the processes, their impacts on the cities are different. These differences are evaluated with respect to their impact on the social and spatial structure in these neighbourhoods.

Comparative Approaches to Gentrification: A Research Framework
Lagendijk, Arnoud; van Melik, Rianne; de Haan, Freek; Ernste, Huib; Ploegmakers, Huub; Kayasü, Serap (Wiley, 2014-07-01)
Comparative research on gentrification is on the rise, especially since gentrification is no longer confined to historical, central neighbourhoods in First World countries, but also appeared in rural, new-built areas and Second World countries. In this paper we present our comparative approach to investigate gentrification processes in four European cities (Arnhem, Istanbul, Vienna, Zurich), which differs from previous studies in its use of assemblage theory as research framework. The multi-layered framewor...
The impact of electricity market liberalization in Turkey "Free consumer" and distributional monopoly cases
Bahce, Serdal; Taymaz, Erol (Elsevier BV, 2008-07-01)
Electricity sector has grown substantially in Turkey since the early 1960s as a result of rapid industrialization and urbanization. The vertically integrated state-owned company had a legally established monopoly on the generation, transmission and distribution of electricity in Turkey. With the support and encouragement of international organizations like the World Bank, Turkey has initiated a comprehensive program to liberalize and privatize the electricity market in 2001. The liberalization of the electr...
SEGREGATION IN ISTANBUL: PATTERNS AND PROCESSES
Pınarcıoğlu, Mehmet Melih (Wiley, 2009-01-01)
In the 1990s, Istanbul regained its long-forgotten role as a regional gateway between Asia and Europe. With the growing importance of the city in global flows, hypotheses concerning the global city and social/spatial polarisation were advanced for Istanbul, arguing that it could best be characterised as a 'divided city'. This paper suggests that despite the city's growing integration with global dynamics, the degree of segregation is not on the rise but even registered a slight fall between 1990 and 2000. T...
The assessment criteria of urban regeneration projects : the case of the Fener-Balat districts in Istanbul
Duzcu, Seda; Akkar Ercan, Zübeyde Müge; Urban Design in City and Regional Planning Department (2006)
Urban regeneration has become a frequently and widely used urban transformation strategy in many cities since the beginning of the 1990s. A number of urban regeneration projects have been implemented in declining city centres, old-industrial and harbour sites, and the working-class residential areas and undermined historical heritage sites of cities. The rise and mushrooming of such projects all over the world however brings about the questions related to their success level. This thesis aims to assess the ...
