We present paper-based inkjet antennas that are fabricated by using silver-based toners in standard printers. In addition to their low costs, the produced antennas are flexible, environmentally friendly, and suitable for radio-frequency identification (RFID) applications. Among alternative choices, hybrid structures involving loop and parasitic meander parts are preferred and successfully combined with passive RFID chips. We also discuss main challenges in the design and fabrication of low-cost inkjet antennas and the related RFID tags.

Design, Simulation, and Fabrication of Broadband Inkjet-Printed Log-Periodic Antennas
Dolapci, Turker; Mutlu, Feza; Ergül, Özgür Salih (2017-09-27)
We present design and computational analysis of log-periodic antennas that are fabricated by using low-cost inkjet printing technology. The designed antennas operate in the 1.5-2.5 GHz range and are suitable for diverse applications, including energy harvesting at WiFi and GSM bands. Suitable designs are fabricated by using silver-based inks in standard commercial printers. Despite the challenges in both design and fabrication processes, we demonstrate log-periodic antennas with desired operating properties...
Very Low-Cost Inkjet-Printed Metamaterials: Progress and Challenges
İbili, Hande; Ergül, Özgür Salih (2017-09-22)
A very low-cost inkjet printing of three-dimensional metamaterials is studied. By using commercial standard printers and loading them with silver-based inks, we are able to fabricate metamaterial blocks that can operate effectively at the lower frequencies of the X-band. We discuss important challenges in constructing a low-cost inkjet printing setup, as well as the current status on fabricating successful structures without resorting to expensive setups. Despite the challenges, it is shown that relatively ...
An adjustable impedance matching network using RF MEMS technology
Ünlü, Mehmet; Demir, Şimşek; Akın, Tayfun; Department of Electrical and Electronics Engineering (2003)
This thesis presents design, modeling, and fabrication of an RF MEMS adjustable impedance matching network. The device employs the basic triple stub matching technique for impedance matching. It has three adjustable length stubs which are implemented using capacitively loaded coplanar waveguides. The capacitive loading of the stubs are realized using the MEMS switches which are evenly distributed over the stubs. There are 40 MEMS bridges on each stub whichare separated with ?/40 spacing making a total of 12...
Design, Simulation, and Fabrication of a Novel Type of Inkjet-Printed Pixel Antennas
Guler, Sadri; Karaosmanoglu, Bariscan; Ergül, Özgür Salih (2016-01-01)
We present a novel type of pixel antennas that are suitable for fabrication in low-cost setups based on commercial inkjet printers. The proposed antennas involve hexagonal cells that can be removed in accordance with rigorous optimizations via genetic algorithms that are supported by full-wave solutions with the multilevel fast multipole algorithm. Optimal pixel configurations are determined precisely for desired electrical characteristics, such as low power-reflection values at required frequencies. Measur...
Inkjet-Printed Pixel Antennas with Hexagonal Cells
Karaosmanoglu, Bariscan; Guler, Sadri; İbili, Hande; Ergül, Özgür Salih (2017-03-24)
We present a new type of pixel antennas involving hexagonal unit cells that are suitable for fabrication in low-cost inkjet-printing setups. Antennas are optimized in a rigorous simulation environment based on the multilevel fast multipole algorithm integrated into genetic algorithms. Hexagonal cells are suitable for both the optimization environment and fabrication setup. Optimizations are performed particularly to design radio-frequency-identification tags, by removing pixels from a given template to achi...
