Particle swarm optimization (PSO) is a popular method to solve the optimization problems. However, calculations for each particle will be excessive when the number of particles and complexity of the problem increases. As a result, the execution speed will be too slow to achieve the optimized solution. Thus, this paper proposes an automated design and optimization method for rotary MRF brakes and similar multiphysics problems. A modified PSO algorithm is developed for solving multi-physics engineering optimization problems. The difference between the proposed method and the conventional PSO is to split up the original single population into several subpopulations according to the division of labor. The distribution of tasks and the transfer of information to the next party have been inspired by behaviors of a hunting party. Simulation results show that the proposed modified PSO algorithm can overcome the problem of heavy computational burden of multi-physics problems while improving the accuracy. Wire type, MR fluid type, magnetic core material, and ideal current inputs have been determined by the optimization process. To the best of the authors' knowledge, this multi-physics approach is novel for optimizing rotary MRF brakes and the developed PSO algorithm is capable of solving other multiphysics engineering optimization problems. The proposed method has showed both better performance compared to the conventional PSO and also has provided small, lightweight, high impedance rotary MRF brake designs. (C) 2018 The Authors. Design of Compact Nano-Optical Couplers Involving Dielectric Nanorods
Karaosmanoglu, Bariscan; Yazar, Sirin; Ergül, Özgür Salih (2018-06-01)
We present optimization and design of nano-optical couplers involving dielectric nanorods. Using tens of elements, optimal array configurations are found to produce alternative responses that can be digitized. For realistic simulations, the couplers are modeled as three-dimensional structures and analyzed via surface integral equations and the multilevel fast multipole algorithm (MLFMA). Initial results are presented demonstrate the feasibility of compact but effective couplers with desired responses.
Optimum design of unbraced steel frames to LRFD-AISC using particle swarm optimization
Dogan, E.; Saka, M. P. (2012-04-01)
Particle Swarm method based optimum design algorithm for unbraced steel frames is presented. The Particle Swarm method is a numerical optimization technique that simulates the social behavior of birds, fishes and bugs. In nature fish school, birds flock and bugs swarm not only for reproduction but for other reasons such as finding food and escaping predators. Similar to birds seek to find food, the optimum design process seeks to find the optimum solution. In the particle swarm optimization each particle in...
Discrete gradient method: Derivative-free method for nonsmooth optimization
Bagirov, A. M.; Karasözen, Bülent; Sezer, M. (2008-05-01)
A new derivative-free method is developed for solving unconstrained nonsmooth optimization problems. This method is based on the notion of a discrete gradient. It is demonstrated that the discrete gradients can be used to approximate subgradients of a broad class of nonsmooth functions. It is also shown that the discrete gradients can be applied to find descent directions of nonsmooth functions. The preliminary results of numerical experiments with unconstrained nonsmooth optimization problems as well as th...
Multi-objective feasibility enhanced particle swarm optimization
Hasanoglu, Mehmet Sinan; Dölen, Melik (Informa UK Limited, 2018-12-02)
This article introduces a new method entitled multi-objective feasibility enhanced partical swarm optimization (MOFEPSO), to handle highly-constrained multi-objective optimization problems. MOFEPSO, which is based on the particle swarm optimization technique, employs repositories of non-dominated and feasible positions (or solutions) to guide feasible particle flight. Unlike its counterparts, MOFEPSO does not require any feasible solutions in the initialized swarm. Additionally, objective functions are not ...
Remesh-Free Shape Optimization by Transformation Optics
ÖZGÜN, ÖZLEM; Kuzuoğlu, Mustafa (2016-12-01)
A remesh-free numerical method is developed for shape optimization problem by combining the transformation optics approach, the finite element method, and the genetic optimization algorithm. To overcome cumbersome remeshing processes, transformation media are designed within the elements where the contour of the object passes. A simple rectangular mesh is used and only the material parameters of the media are redefined according to the scatterer contour that is represented by B-spline curves. The proposed a...
