Lamium (Lamiaceae, Lamioideae) is a widespread and taxonomically complex genus. A comparative anatomical study of the root, stem, leaf and petioles in 33 taxa assigned to this genus is carried out in order to address generic delimitation, subgeneric classification and species delimitation. Using light and scanning electrone microscopy, anatomical features and indumentum characteristics are investigated. In addition, the phylogenetic implication of the observed variations are discussed. Anatomical characters of taxonomic interest are as follows: the presence or absence of collenchyma at the corners of stems and petioles, the number of pith rays in the root, shape of the vascular bundles in petioles and characteristics of leaf mesophyll. Non-glandular trichomes can be short or long, while the glandular trichomes are stalked, subsessile or sessile. The indumentum is taxonomically significant, particularly in discrimination of taxa in "L. garganicum complex" and their delimitation from L. armenum. Trichome characters are also important in distinguishing the alpine Turkish endemic L. eriocephalum from other taxa in L. sect. Amplexicaule. Our analyses partly corroborate the findings of recent phylogenetic investigations and support also partly the current infrageneric classification of the genus. Anatomical features and trichome characters reject accepting Galeobdolon and Wiedemaniana as distinct genera. In general, Our investigations reveal the usefulness of such characters in taxon delimitation at various ranks, especially at the specific and partly at the sectional level. (C) 2016 Elsevier GmbH. Pollen morphology of the genus Lamium L. (Lamiaceae) and its systematic implications
Atalay, Zeynep; CELEP, FERHAT; BİLGİLİ, BİLGEHAN; Doğan, Musa (2016-01-01)
This is the first comprehensive palynological investigation of the genus Lamium. The pollen morphology of 48 taxa (including species, subspecies and varieties) of the genus Lamium was investigated and documented using light microscopy (LM) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Lamium pollen is small to medium sized (I) = 21.65-39.96 mu m), oblate-spheroidal to subprolate in shape and tricolpate. Three major exine sculpturing patterns (reticulate, granulate and microreticulate) were observed. The results i...
A Micromorphological study on the genus thymus lamiaceae in Turkey
Kütükalan, Damla; Doğan, Musa; Department of Biology (2019)
The genus Thymus L.(Lamiaceae) having its center of diversity in the Mediterranean distributed mainly in the Old World includes 45 species in Turkey. It belongs to the monophyletic subfamily Nepetoideae. In this study, epidermal micromorphological properties of 32 species of Thymus were examined by using scanning electron microscopy. Micromorphology of vegetative and floral organs were found to be providing good taxonomic features for understanding phylogeny of the genus.
Scanning electron microscope (SEM) and light microscope (LM) studies on the seed morphology of Verbascum taxa (Scrophulariaceae) and their systematic implications

Verbascum L. is the largest genus of the family Scrophulariceae and includes several species are of medicinal importance. In this study, external seed morphologies of 30 taxa included in Group A belonging to genus Verbascum L. (Scrophulariaceae) in Turkey, have been investigated using SEM (Scanning Electron Microscopy) and LM (Light Microscopy). Light microscope observations showed that seed size ranges from 0.3 mm to 1.5 mm in length and 0.1 to 0.6 in width. Seeds vary from oblong, oblong prismatic, trigon...
Taxonomic Importance of Seed Morphology in Allium (Amaryllidaceae)
CELEP, FERHAT; KOYUNCU, MEHMET; Fritsch, Reinhard M.; KAHRAMAN, AHMET; Doğan, Musa (2012-10-01)
Allium is one of the largest monocotyledonous genera. Southwest to Central Asia is the major center of diversity for the genus. In the present study, seeds of 62 Allium taxa from Turkey classified in subg. Allium (sect. Allium, sect. Brevispatha, sect. Codonoprasum and sect. Multicaule), subg. Amerallium (sect. Molium), subg. Melanocommyum (sect. Acanthoprason and sect. Melanocrommyum), and subg. Polyprason (sect. Falcatifolio and sect. Scorodon) were examined using light and scanning electron microscopy to...
Anatomy, palynology and floral diversity of the genus lamium l. (lamiaceae) in Turkey
Atalay, Zeynep; Doğan, Musa; Department of Biology (2016)
Lamium L. is the type genus of subfamily Lamioideae and the family Lamiaceae. Due to the absence of recognizable morphological characters, circumscription of the genus has undergone many changes through time. Turkey is the main biodiversity center of the genus with 36 taxa, 18 of which are endemic. Even though many genera in the subfamiliy Lamioideae have been subjected to various anatomical and micromorphological studies, a comprehensive investigation of the genus Lamium is still lacking. In the first part...
